My husband & I were in the car the other night & we heard a radio show host, that people call for money advice, state something to a woman that wanted to know what the best work from home job is for moms. I liked his response & I found it most helpful :
He said that the medical data entry things are scams & he said that the best jobs for women that stay home is to open your own business from a hobby that you are already good at. This really hit home for me because since I have had my children I have been thinking how am I gonna work from home?
I crochet & I just need to start up my hat business! I have had friends tell me to do an article on my hats & get the word out there. I even need to start up an Ebay store.... The guy on the radio also said to get the word out...business cards, telling friends & family, etc. I think that is the hardest thing to do is getting the word out.
My mother taught me to crochet when I was 12. I did the single chain & then it grew into the double crochet & I have done a few blankets since.
Here is the blanket that took me a year & 1/2 to finish cause I did double crochet the whole time & the blanket is big enough for a queen sized bed!
I learned the granny stitch & made my son a blanket! This is one of my favorite blankets I have made!
Then I decided I would make my daughter a blanket & I haven't finished it yet, but I will soon. This one was done with the shell stitch.
I get so excited when I learn a new stitch! There are many helpful sites online that help with stitches...this one is my favorite....
I have started making hats & I followed a pattern I found online, but I did something different with it on the edging at the base of the hat.
I think these hats are soooooo cute on my daughter & I am sure they would be cute on any little girl!
My boy looks so cute in the ski hats & even little girls look cute in them too! I like the ones I have made for myself they look good ;o).

I gave my nephew a ski hat for his birthday & my niece put it on & she looked absolutly adorable in it! I just couldn't get over how adorable she looked! LOL. So I made her one for her birthday.
These are BSU (college) colors. My brother-in-law goes to that school & he has been obsessed with wearing the colors lately so I made one for him & his kids.
I do team colored hats...here is a Denver Broncos one I did
I even had a friend request a Notre Dame hat. I did the lettering & line at the bottom in gold. I will do what ever theme or color you could possibly want ;o)
Hats are so expensive in the stores & so I have been up in the air about the prices. If anyone wanted one I can work with them on price.
(I made this hat for fun & I LOVE the colors...reminds me of Fall leaves!)

I make butterflies to go on the little girl hats or even little flowers...of course if those are added the price goes up ;o).
Anyway I would say that crocheting is my most marketable talent at this time in my life. I have also been told I should be a dessert caterer, but that would be a lot of time away from home and the little kids...so I am sticking with crocheting. It takes me roughly 2 hours to make a hat (depending on what I add to it).
That would be an easy job for me to do ;o).
What are some of your talents & have you done a business like this in your own home? Or what kind of job would you do from home if you could?

My sister-in-law sews & she made this cute bean bag thingy for my little girl & I told her that she needs to sell them! I think she would do well!
I have another friend that makes polymer(sp?) clay babies...they are sooooooooo cute! She has an Etsy.com store...I do need to get on that! ;o) Thanks for the comment Chelle... ;o)
I write and have managed to earn some money from it.
As for my hobby I love working with kids with disabilities. I am going to school to be a special ed teacher because I want to be the one who gives these children with disabilities the education they deserve. So I won't be working from home but I will be doing something I love. :)
If I had the time, resources & MONEY - I would be a professional organizer!!!
But... I am going to college to be a teacher - at the age of 40 - Wish Me Luck!!! :O)~
Thanks everyone for the comments! Deborah F the computer help is a good idea! My parents pay this guy to come & help them do things & I think they pay him like $20 an hour or something like that....it's good money that is for sure! ;o)
Amanda good point as long as you enjoy what you are doing it can be nice to work outside the home...
Leslie I think that is cool how you make the soaps & washcloths! nice work!
I would love to do scrapbooking for people! I do feel I have some work to gain before doing it though! It would be fun and its what I like to do!
I have thought of doing the consignment thing too. That does sound good.
Just things to think about. I started out on ebay in 2000 selling hats, though mine were sewn, but it was a lot easier to be seen (and appreciated) in those days. I started selling my paintings for awhile and now am back to sewing. (I also crochet, but not professionally lol.)
The world can never have too many of us artsy/craftsy types as far as I'm concerned. But what we could really use more of is buyers. I think we are so conditioned to think that factory made is the best, or that something has to come from a highly promoted and highly priced New York designer (and then still be cheaply manufactured overseas!) to be gift worthy. But I think the more we educate ourselves and learn to appreciate the value of craft, cottage industry and indie designers, hopefully that will start to change.
Anyway, I posted an article about a website asking people to pledge to buy handmade this holiday season. Here's the link if anyone wants to read and sign up~ Buy handmade this holiday season
Have you heard of Etsy? They're a handcrafters' storefront website. Might be something to consider. ;)
I also do freelance writing and it keeps me busy! Find out about the upcoming holiday craft shows in your area.. you can sell your stuff there!
