August 4, 1892. A affluent businessman and his spouse discovered brutally murdered in their Victorian home in Fall River, Massachusetts.
The Accused: the youngest daughter, Lizzie Bordon. The Verdict: Not Guilty!
So goes the lore of the most legendary crime in the chronicles of American history. The mystery remains:
If Lizzie Borden did not brandish the murder weapon, who did?
One of the most renowned unsolved crimes in American history happened in Fall River, Massachusetts.
You can really vacation in the room where Abby Borden was killed with an ax. Or you can visit in the parlor where Andrew J. Borden was found. As for ghosts, as gossip tells it there has been extradinary experiences in the house. Things like body impressions materializing on newly made beds, and mysterious fog or smoke emerging in the parlor.
Halloween is of course one of the most popular nights at the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast, a Greek revival housel located in Fall River, Mass., where Andrew Borden and his second wife, Abby, were massacred on Aug. 4, 1892. The restored Greek-revival home is now a first-class bed & breakfast. You are invited to choose one of 6 beautifully decorated bedrooms and roam the house to learn the true facts.
What were the thoughts of the first police officers on the scene? Who were the suspects? What was the public’s reaction? Will you join the legions who think Lizzie guilty, or will you choose to be a stalwart defender?
In the morning you are tempted to enjoy a hot breakfast evocative of the food the Borden’s may have eaten on that historic Thursday in 1892. The breakfast we had on our stay included Bananas, Johnnycakes (unleavened cornmeal pancakes), sugar cookies, and coffee, in addition to traditional breakfast staples.
For a unique experience, be a guest for an evening …Lizzie awaits you.
The saga of Lizzie Borden has never ended. A number of plays like Murder Americana - The People vs. Lizzie Borden, written by Harry McEwan , musicals like Lizzie Bordon by Christopher Mcgovern, novels like The Borden Tragedy : A Memoir of the Infamous Double Murder at Fall River, Mass., 1892, movies like The Curse of Lizzie Bordon and even an opera by Jack Beeson have been penned about her. The A&E Television Network produced an hour-long Lizzie Biography and both the Discovery and History Channels have produced programs about her life. From the Broadway musical New Faces of 1952 came the song "You Can't Chop Your Papa up in Massachusetts" and, of course, who doesn't remember the infamous rhyme:
"Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks
And when she saw what she had done
She gave her father forty-one"
