Well its nigh on midnight here in NW Arkansas and the house is quiet except for Andy from Mayberry who is firing his sleep walking Deputy Warren for hittin’ on Helen. This must be a later version of the show as I’m wondering whatever happened to good ol Barney Fife?
Life has been one flurry here since my grandbaby, Billy, arrived three weeks ago. Red, blue and yellow Power Rangers are strewn on the floor, riddled with hordes of good guys and bad guys sitting motionless in their camouflaged colored Jeep, their guns and knives drawn ready for battle.
This is the first time Papa Mike and I have had Billy all to ourselves since his birth four years ago. With us living in Arkansas and he Minnesota a weekend jaunt was out of the question, so this stay was very special to both of us. It took about a week for him to be able to scramble onto Grandma’s lap and lay that little round head on my shoulder. Papa Mike spoiled him rotten, after all where do y’all suppose those Power Rangers and Good and Bad Guys came from? We visited the playgrounds, went to movies, read books, said our prayers and ate lots of his favorite things; popsicles, corn dogs, chocolate milk and red beans and rice (ohhhh so nice).
Momma Raquel arrived last Friday evening and when her car pulled up, the Power Rangers were soon forgotten as he ran to the door, stepped out onto the deck and hollered, ‘Momma, Momma!” We heard a shout, “Billy! Billy!” Because he was barefooted I held him back from running out onto the stony pathway and he felt like a wiggly worm in my arms. I said, “Billy, she’s here, be patient, she’s getting her suitcase out of the car!”
“But Grandma, I can hear her, but I can’t see her face!”
The moon glinted on the autumn wisteria as my beautiful, regal, dark haired Brasilian daughter-in-law made her way up the stony path. Wrestling free, I let him go….straight into his waiting Momma’s outstretched arms.
Such is love….
