Come with me as I tell you a bit about that day, 48 years - 5 months and 20 days ago.
May not be an important date to you. For me, it was the day I was born, which was indeed a very important day to me and probably to my parents. I weighed 8lb 8oz and that's about all I remember from my Birth Certificate. I was born in Long Beach California, my dad was in the Navy and out to sea at the time. I had a brother who was a couple years older and still is to this day.
Dwight D Eisenhower was President with Richard Nixon as Vice President and we all know how that turned out.
Food and gas was a tad bit less expensive.
Bread: .20/loaf
Milk: 1.01/gal
Eggs: .88/doz
Stamp: .04/ea
Gas: .30/gal
Average income was around 6,000.00 a Year.
Seems that eggs have always been an inexpensive item.
I share May as a Birthday month with many talented and wise people, but on May 4th 1959 Randy Travis, country music star was born with a birth name of Randy Bruce Traywick. Randy Travis is a bit easier to remember.
The music my parents might have listened to include Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by Platters, Come Softly to Me by Fleetwoods, Venus by Frankie Avalon and Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin.
48 years later I still enjoy all these songs, favorites being Mack the Knife and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.
May 4th was a grand day for Perry Como & Ella Fitzgerald who won Grammy Awards at the 1st Grammy Awards and Archibald Macleish who won the Pulitzer prize. Of course I know and even appreciate the talents of Perry and Ella, but I have to admit I have not a clue of who Archibald Macleish is. I kind of like the ring of his name as I say it out loud though.
Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Dragnet and The Twilight Zone were television shows. To this day I watch all 4 of them when I find them on TV.
Troll Dolls, Risk, Barbie, Chatty Cathy and Game of Life were all introduced in 1959. I had many Troll Dolls as a kid my favorite had purple hair. Of course, I also had a Barbie (note 1 Barbie) which was plenty. My imagination did the rest with clothes that my Grandmother made for her. I would still play Risk and Life if someone wanted to and brought the game with them, as I don't know what happened to mine.
Kind of nice to wander back through time. What was going on in the world the day you were born? Do you enjoy some of the same music?
