Obviously, I am NOT a medical doctor. I am not a scientist, Ph.D. of Science. I am a lay person. I am reporting what the doctor stated. My superfluous comments are in blue. The doctor's statements are in black.
Daily:
3- 13 oz glasses orange juice. This elevates the citric level and lower the urinary ph and helps prevent kidney stone. Even natural juice is a lot of calories, so compensate by eliminating “junking”.
Lots of water (to the orange juice add a lot of water.)
Diluting the urine really helps decrease kidney stones.
Eat less dairy*
Have more fruits and vegetables in your diet. (Now who doesn’t know this one.)
Add a Fiber supplement to your diet. Bind up those stone-forming ions in the urinary tract and in the intestinal tract.
*Add a probiotic. Probiotics have now been shown to reduce kidney stones.
Probiotic: A microbe that protects its host and prevents disease. The best-known probiotic is Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is found in yogurt, acidophilus milk, and supplements. Probiotics counter the decimation of helpful intestinal bacteria by antibiotics. Probiotics given in combination with antibiotics are therefore useful in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The yeast S. boulardii and three strains of Lactobacillus have also been shown to be useful in this regard
If you aren’t already taking Probiotics, I can tell you from personal experience they changed my health -- to an exponential high. They are miraculous. An article was done on Probiotics by one of the doctors here on Gather. Yogurt, sour cream, some cheeses, and foods containing the active bacteria lactobacillus acidophilus is what I look for as Probiotic-okay.
And include a multiple vitamin and mineral.
Most of these stones are calcium stones, 80% or so, so the notion is you should have less calcium in your diet. Dr. Becker’s research into this area says studies are finding that is not necessarily true. He says,
“Less diary, yes. But the calcium and minerals in a multiple vitamin, if there is excess calcium in the intestinal tract, it binds up the oxalate’s ions and it lowers the kidney stone occurrence.”
(My own aside about the preceding quote: I have absolutely NO IDEA of what he is talking about -- oxalating this and ion that. I can tell you from personal experience that what he says WORKS, and as you see, is DRUG-FREE! HALLELUJAH!)
Dr. Becker is saying that once you have suffered with kidney stones, once you have followed this plan you can have less re-occurrences.
Dr. Becker finalizes his discussion with this: “If you can only do one thing, drink more water.”
----------------------------------------------------------
About Dr. Becker:
Richard L. Becker, D.O. is the co-host of the national health talk show, Your Health with Dr. Richard and Cindy Becker.” He is widely recognized as a health expert on health supplements and holistic healing methods. He is board certified in Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy. He is a graduate of the University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kansas City, Missouri, and of the Loma Linda University, Riverside, California, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in biochemistry. His twenty-three years of experience in medicine, treating the whole body, brings a unique brand of practicality and insight to family practice. Dr. Becker currently presides in North Central Texas with his wife, Cindy, and their two adult daughters.
My Aside: Having been ill for 3.5 years and “miraculously” (my doctor said that, not I) healed when doctors had said I never would be, I did not have much faith in traditional medicine. I had been through “every procedure known to medicine” (again that was the doctors’ term) without their being able to determine the “cause”** of the ailment. I started watching Dr. Becker because I was looking for something holistic anyway.
One day, while watching a program I heard him describe the 3.5 years of the hell I had gone through in, maybe, 60 seconds. I was so angry I wanted to punch a wall. Not only did he describe it, he knew the cause, how it could have been prevented, and how it could have treated to heal. The good it did me, for all this was after the fact.
Dr. Becker holds his colleagues in high-esteem, and so shall I in this article; enough said. He DOES NOT do your doctor’s work by diagnosing your conditions since he cannot see your charts and has not examined you, but he does speak to the advantages of holistic remedies, just as you read earlier. I encourage you to check him out.
You shall find programming information for him here.

Thanks for the info. These are good steps to prevent CERTAIN KINDS of kidney stones, calcium oxalate, which are the most common. Some of these steps can actually promote other types of stones, such as uric acid stones, in certain individuals.
Also, cranberry juice makes urine more acidic (sorry it's gross, but that's the goal here) than orange juice with less sugar. Plenty of water helps more than just about anything else.
Keep in mind that these tips from Dr. Becker are more to prevent recurrence of calcium oxalate stones rather than total prevention.
save lives.....water IS life!!! And, science will back me on this......try to eat foods that keep your body 80%alkaline,20%acid, your healh will ZZOOOOMMM up the chart!!!
Okay, gotta go look up"probiotics" as brother dan (my word guru) is otherwise occupied......saluda!!
Uh-oh, ooooh no! She's back on her feet again!
Thanks Tiffany, you're very kind to say that!
I am most impressed with the guest physicians, nutritionists and other experts he has on his program.
Particularly a Dr. Stephen Sinatra out of Connecticut. Sinatra is a cardiologist, and is always coming up with new discoveries. He isn't on there enough, in my opinion.
Aha! I was too late! lol. Melinda already responded to Penni's comment. Thank's Melinda!
Birdee: I have the book right here. As I said, Dr. Becker's wife is a vegetarian, quite the animal lover she is. I would be surprised if he didn't offer some alternative to dairy if there was one. Let me check and see if he offers one. Stand by . . .
