Legendary pop music producer Phil Ramone was a violin prodigy and Juilliard kid who got started early on the glam side of the pop music business. When Marilyn Monroe sang "Happy Birthday" for JFK at Madison Square Garden in 1962, it was Phil Ramone adjusting the mike.
Since then, from Peter, Paul and Mary to Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Ray Charles, Bono, Madonna and Rufus Wainwright in Carnegie Hall just last year, Phil Ramone has engineered and produced for the very biggest names in the music industry.
His list is a platinum who’s who of American popular music. You could argue Phil Ramone made the sound of American pop.
Listen to an On Point conversation with Phil Ramone about his new book on making the best-loved music of half a century.
Can you imagine one hand, one mind, one ear behind so many pop hits, behind the soundtrack of American life?
