"The Pumpkin Patch"

Yesterday, Matt and I went with our friends Mike and Kelly and their kids to a place Kelly likes to call The Pumpkin Patch, although this place is so much more!http://media-files.gather.com/images/d256/d429/d744/d224/d96/f3/full.jpg

It is a farm called Almar Orchards, and it is about 5 miles or so from our home.

The trees were so close, you could pick the apples right off the branches!

I suspect this sign was necessary for after visting the animals.

They had a lot of stuff set up for the kids to play on or in.

Rot? Rot? The recipe lady is going to let an ingredient like a pumpkin rot? It's Halloween, for cryin' out loud. I figured we'd be inundated with pumpkin recipes...Halloween...the time of year when pumpkins are 'legal'. What about pumpkin cupcakes...what about pumpkin cookies...what about pumpkin pie? If you don't have pumpkin goodies...it's not Halloween! And you'd better have a big supply of candy to satisfy our sweet tooth.

I bet this was a lot of fun. I love the great tractor ride. What a clever idea and it looks like the kids really enjoy it.

That looks like so much fun! I loved going apple picking in the fall. That pumpkin is HUGE! There are many things about New England that I miss...I'll forget what they were as soon as it starts snowing up there...LOL

Hi Shannon, Great pics. We didn't make it to the pumpkin patch this year. Our orchard was wiped out in the spring from frost. Crazy , we had a devastating frost in the spring followed by a drought in the summer. The orchard was a 100% loss. Most of the farmers suffered total losses this year as well. My heart goes out to those with animals to graze as there is nothing to graze on and they have to pay outlandish prices to have hay shipped in from other states.

Looks like fun. We actually did visit the orchard in Champaign on Saturday. It was a nightmare! There were literally hundreds of people and kids...no parking at all. After circling the lot a few times we found a place, but when it was time to leave-someone had parked their car in the place you had to drive through to get out. We had to exit backwards, with all these people mad at us. We bought a tiny cup of cider, a package of 6 apple donuts and the smallest bag of apples (about 8) for $17. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I miss the Michigan orchards...and even the one near my house. I certainly hope they have apples again next year, as this one was a tourist trap.

I feel sorry for a lot of farmers this year, April! So many have had terrible losses due to drought and even frost!
