With the price of gas going higher and higher, we could all us some tips on how to conserve what we spend our money on.
1. Avoid warming up your car for a prolonged period of time. Less than a minute warm-up time is enough, even on a cold morning.
2. When starting from dead stop, accelerate slowly. Drive the speed limit. Slow and steady’s safe—and it saves gas.
3. Did you know that idling your engine for one minute consumes the same amount of gas as re-starting the engine? Don’t turn the engine off and on needlessly.
4. Extra weight in the car, trunk, or on top of your car will reduce your mileage. If you can, get rid of extra tires, back seats and unnecessary heavy objects.
5. When you’re on the highway, keep your windows closed. Open windows reduce mileage by about 10%.
6. Have regular tune-ups and change your air filter often to ensure gas efficiency.
7. Take public transportation, carpool, and combine shopping trips. Walking or biking is better for your budget and your health.
8. Consider a hybrid. A hybrid combines an electric motor with a conventional gas-powered engine. Over its lifetime, a hybrid will use roughly half the gas a conventional car uses.
9. Urge your elected officials to raise fuel economy standards to 40 miles per gallon. Doing this would save nearly 4 million barrels of oil a day!

The only concern I would have about the fuel economy standards being raised to 40 mpg is what about us who have cars right now that get under 40 mpgs? Would we be grandfathered in saying that is ok or would we be forced to spend thousands of dollars to revamp our cars to meet the new standards or buy new cars?
So here I am cursing away trying to get my 45mpg Prius to go over 50mpg and it turns out that all those gas guzzling drivers can do more to help save gas than all my attempts at fine tuning my driving habits. The way the average person drives can have a big impact on their mileage performance. Yes you truck and SUV drivers … we need your help ASAP!
I will add that those Hybrids are amazing. My BF went up to Tahoe for a wedding a couple of weeks ago. To save on gas and wear and tear on our car, he rented a Prius. Even with the daily rental rates, he save more than $50 by doing it rather than taking our Tundra. He got over 40 MPG!
