Birds in silhouette on the black bars of the wires
Perch like notes
Against the soft blue page of sky--
Fat brown doves for whole notes,
Sprightly sparrows in a row of eighths,
Solemn king birds play the halfs
And long-tailed grackles are the quarter notes.
The glittery plastic wand in a tiny hand
Is just right for conducting the symphony
Of gravel under stroller wheels
Waving grass, bobbing palm leaves and
Early bats eager for the first mosquitoes.
The clouds are crowding in from the east
Tips rosy with the last western kiss.
The thin slice of moon above
Looks almost ready to open its silver eye.
I somehow hear the bird score
Inside myself
Like a deaf composer.
I think it's a waltz
Because my heart is beating 3/4 time.
