Today's online shopping comparison

So ... hubby wants to buy a set of Ryoki tools...  and since I have earned Home Depot gift cards, it would make sense to buy them at Home Depot, right...?

But since I'm on an extended rant re: the fact that even though US money is worth LESS than Canadian $$$ right now, I checked to see how much it would be on the US site as well.

Couldn't find THE set on both sites - so we looked at the previous model one - hmm... at first glance it seemed that perhaps HD was doing better than other retailers in terms of playing fair... oh, but nope... the US set includes an extra piece ...so not a fair comparison.

So then - out of curiousity, we looked at some 'exact same' stuff...

Unless you happen to live in Canada - then it will cost you $379.

How is this reasonable?

we are not buying a log splitter... just one of the things that they had the exact same model on both the US and Canadian sites.... I was only interested in the price comparison ... the tool kit Ross wants is also Ryobi... it is $299 in the US... listed at $369 in the flyer he got yesterday, but not showing on the website in Canada yet, so....

Would be nice to know what factors influence price aside from the profit margin. Like freight, taxes, etc.

taxes and shipping - on the online sites - are all added on after the fact....

retailers have always told us that the price differences are "to account for the difference in the Canadian dollar"

that's why books & magazines are printed with both a Canadian and US price too... it will be interesting to see if that changes now

No, it's not reasonable & I would make it clear to HD or whoever that you wont be buying from them until it changes. That's crazy!

I hear everything costs more in Canada. I have a Canadian friend who comes here at least twice a year do do her clothes shopping and Christmas shopping. She told me even with the cost of gas and an over night stay in a hotel, she saves a ton of money.

Canadian money is actually higher than US now... but nobody is in a hurry to do any price adjustments .... I think that as long as Canadians continue to be willing to pay higher prices - even though the justification for doing so no longer applies, businesses will be quite happy to continue charging us unreasonably higher prices.

I would guess part of the cost comes from importation if it's an American Company....

and I don't think transportation is the issue at all .... they charge us more for Canadian products too - supposedly 'because of the difference in the dollar'

same here, Lyla.... that's part of what hubby and I were talking about this morning - NOT buying anything we don't absolutely need

unfortunately, he does need stock for his store - and at this point, not able to get it cheaper and therefore unable to drop HIS prices as well

That is quite a difference in price, I don't see why it would be so high.
