Yesterday, I met first-time fiction author Julie Hahnke as she spoke with sixth grade students at a Massachusetts elementary school. Hahnke is the author of "Through the Eyes of a Raptor" a young adult fantasy book. Loosely based on Celtic mythology, the book tells the story of a 13-year-old girl with the powers to shape shift. The book is set in the Scottish Highlands and is filled with the fantasy details kids eat up -- ancient prophecy, poison, murder and msichief. The young hero, Kelly McBride, is an orphan sent to live with her mysterious grandmother in an old eerie Scottish estate. There she learns about ancient powers and is drawn into a dangerous adventure.
An interesting note is that young Kelly has a bagpipe obsessed friend, and Hahnke herself is an accomplished bagpipe player. After talking with the students and reading a segment from her book, she demonstrated her bagpipe skills.
Move over Harry Potter, Hahnke's book is now being considered for a screenplay!
Through the Eyes of a Raptor by Julie Hahnke, iUniverse, $19.95
