Teresa W. LOVES horses! And Teresa W. is me, so talking in the third person is a seriously scary sign!!
I have loved horses my entire life. When I was 12 or 13, I got my first horse and then had a horse, off and on, until I was 16 and pregnant when the horse-hating, fun-crushing stinkers in my life made me get rid of her! :-( But that's another story for another time.
Roll forward many many years and I STILL loved horses! So when my ex-husband asked me to re-marry him for the second time and sweetened the deal with a nice house, car AND horses [plural, one for each member of the family], well, greedy me fell for that hook, line, and quarter horse of my dreams! I had my horses for just a few years and then, wow, BAM! Life and soul-crushing circumstances caused the horses to be sold, along with everything else! I ended up with my daughter and my two dogs and nothing else from THAT fiasco! But, again, that's another story for probably never! Sorry, too painful and awful :-(
But I digress, as I am always doing whenever I start writing and thinking about horses! :-)
So here I am today, as far from ever having another real live horse as I will ever be! I'm not just being a party-poopin', negative, feeling-sorry-for-myself person either! With the money troubles and the health troubles [I don't walk real well or steady anymore :-( ], horses are not in my forseeable future.
I am okay with that, in a way! I feed my horse love. I no longer ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist [good thing too!!] So I collect horse stuff. Anything to do with horses really but mostly horse figures / statues. I've never counted the horse figures I already have but it must be at least several hundreds by now. The Breyer ones are cool but expensive so I get the smaller horses which are usually much cheaper. I can't tell you how excited I get when my adult daughter hits the thrift store and brings me a new horse to add to my collection! I don't even care if I already have it! She's brought me some really great ones!
I read horse magazines. I have a subscription to a couple and if I had the money, I would have a subscription to many many more!! Sometimes my daughter will find a free subscription on the internet and get it for me and not tell me until it gets here in the mail! And that is a cool surprise! :-)
I look at horses on the Internet. Not the horses for sale section, that would be too much to deal with but horse websites with information or just really pretty pictures. I also try to look at every horse picture, video and article in gather. I don't know if I DO see them all but I try hard to!!
I also collect AND read horse books! I've done that for many years so fortunately I have lots of them! I don't know how many horse books that I have and I have actually managed to get rid of some of the extras [heehee, you can never have too many copies and different editions of Black Beauty or Misty of Chincoteague or King of the Wind, can you?], but I imagine that I still have several hundred horse books left too. I also have favorite horse illustrators [C.W. Anderson, Sam Savitt, et al] that I try to find their books to buy at prices that I can afford, which is not always an easy task.

Honey Traveler Copper Lady
My first horse My second horse My third horse
Those three are when I was a kid, I had them one at a time.

Misty Danzig Spice Moonie
These are the horses that we had while I was an adult. Only Misty and Spice were supposted to be mine but I ended with all of them mostly since I was almost the only one who rode them. We sold Misty when I got Spice. And then Spice turned up pregnant. No one knew she was pregnant when I bought her so it was an unexpected surprise gift! She gave birth to Heather [below]. Since I didn't get to ride Spice once we knew she was pregnant, I rode Moonie. Moonie was supposed to be my daughter's horse but I was the one who rode her most of the time [and quite often I might add!] and she became my favorite horse to ride. So I considered her mine and she considered it that way too! Danzig and Red were supposed to be for my ex-husband to ride. I think in the few years that we had them, he rode maybe 5 times, if that. We sold Danzig because he was scary and too much for us to handle.

Red Heather, Spice's baby
I have a lot of pictures of Heather from the day she was born until she had to go to a new home [that's what this one is] which I will be writing a photo essay about as soon as I can find them! I misplaced them in the move!

Just a small sampling of some of the horse books that I have. A few of my horse books I have had to part with when I was absolutely desperate for money so I sold them on ebay. :-(

Just a couple of the horse statues that I have that I haven't posted a picture of before now!

And since I know this is getting to be very long, here's a wave good bye for now!!
And there you have it. The story of my addiction, er, obsession, I MEAN *LOVE* for all things horses!! I know this comes as an amazing surprise to anyone who knows me but the time had come for me to stop keeping this secret to myself!!

Nicely written article.
I liked that you included pictures.
I was obsessed with horses as a young girl. I read horse books (all of the ones you mentioned and then some). I had framed horse pictures on my wall and horse posters. I wanted a horse badly. Then I got older and discovered boys. ;) They replaced my horse obsession. All the horse pictures came down and up went pictures of hot, sexy men.
My aunt is obsessed with horses too. She always had a horse while growing up and has one now. You saw the essay I did of her current horse, Strider, with his head poking into the window.
You should so join my new group "All Photo Essays Here" and post all these photo essays you've been doing, Teresa.

I'm off to comment on the pictures here now...
