I like to say that my son is on the French food diet. It’s not that he has a highly sophisticated palate and it’s not that he asks for a side of escargot with his fishy crackers. Rather, it’s his love of the cuisine many parents of small children are all too familiar with – bread, fruit and cheese. Oh, and anything orange. Thankfully, most things that are both edible and orange fall into the fruit or cheese category, it all comes full circle.
If your children are connoisseurs of this diet, I imagine you are thankful, as I am, that they are getting in lots of good, healthy dairy. But I also imagine that you get into those frustrating and sticky places, as I do, trying to entice the wee one to please please please eat the same meal as everyone else for once.
Last week, I attended a 3-A-Day (that’s part of the National Dairy Council) event at Super Suppers in Northbrook, Illinois that made cooking with cheese, milk, yogurt and lots of other goodness feel a lot easier than it normally does in my kitchen at 5:30 on a typical weekday night. Although the other mamas putting together meals were mommy bloggers, I felt like, right there in an inviting kitchen just outside of Chicago, I was in a room full of gourmet French chefs. We talked, laughed and got advice about our picky-eating, allergy-sensitive, very hungry, growth-spurty kids. We also put together six suppers to take home to heat up or freeze, each full of vegetables, grains, lean protein and loads of the dairy our petits enfants crave. Maybe it was the great company, maybe it was the tasty ingredients set out for us as if we were all having our own Julia Child moment, maybe it was that someone else cleaned up after us or that we don’t have to worry about cooking dinner for a week, or maybe it was all of it stirred up into one evening, but it was tres magnifique.
Here are a few highlights from our 3-A-Day.

Kathy from Barking at Kathy and Alma from Marketing Mommy mingle as we await a big evening of dairy delights.

These people cleaned up after us, which I hate to admit is pretty dreamy at this point in my life. And feel free to 'fess up because I know I am not alone in that.

This guy can work a camp stove, my friends.

The best way to lure in the mommy bloggers is with snacks. With my affinity for all things dip-able, it is amazing I'm not still eating as many calzones and Doritos as I did freshman year in college.

Who is this organized woman and when is she getting her own cooking show?

Danielle from Foodmomiac and I get a little supervision in preparing veggie lasagna. But look at us! We look like pros! Just show us where to scoop in some extra mozzarella and we're fine.

Jeanne from House In Progress prepares Bruschetta Chicken. She served this to guests the next night. Guests who still have no clue the woman doesn't cook. The kicker is, they loved it and think Jeanne's evolved from blogger to foodie.
