Explaining steampunk

A while back, I had posted an article about trying to work through a definition of steampunk, which I ultimately deleted because it got nowhere. I wasn't able to coherently present what I was trying to work through, nor anything useful for other people to work through.

Last night, I found out that an article was written for The Storque (Etsy's blog/newsletter) that did exactly what I couldn't do: define steampunk succinctly.

I never realized that it was a subculture. Always thought of it as a sub-genre of science fiction/fantasy.

I had never heard of this; thanks for the info, as I can store it in my brain along with all sorts of other trivia that doesn't really MEAN anything to me, just makes me a kick-ass Trivial Pursuit player!

Nippy: I think that it definitely started as the sub-genre, but has morphed into a really interesting subculture based partially on the sub-genre. It's no surprise that I was attracted to the subculture, because I liked reading that sub-genre when I was younger! :)
