Both of my cats were "freebies" or "free to good home" cats. Basically they were sick and needed caring for so nobody wanted them. Milla was given to me by a pet store because they didn't want her around the healthy kittens. Someone has dropped her off and she was full of worms and fleas. Karma was an add I answered for a free kitten. She was so small and wouldn't have survived without special care and I felt I was a good person to provide her with the attention she needed.
So where did your pets come from?

Batman was given to my 3 year old son at a garage sale. I love the kitten, but people should ASK and not just tell a 3 year old that the cat belongs to them... They told him that he is the "mommy" of the kitten before I could say no... I only would have said no since Sammy was just starting to get adjusted to the move here and oh my 3 year old (he's used to playing rough with Sammy) doesn't do well with sickly kittens...
Never the less, they are both here, well cared for, happy, healthy, and loved...
My 3rd cat came free from a friend.
Milo we got free from a family giving him away
My second cat, Taffeta, was abandoned as a kitten in an alley, so I took her in.
My third, Duncan, I got from a shelter.
First dog, Mugsy, also came from a shelter. She is a Boxer- apparently that is one of the most abandoned dogs (they are very hyper)
Second dog, Mutt, followed us home on the 4th of July, and has been with us ever since.
My German Shepherd I got from a breeder.
Wally and Lita - littermates - 3 year old cats - were stuck in my bathroom wall at my old apartment. My landlord said he'd wait for them to die then get in there and get them out. I got mad and tore a hole in the bathroom to get to the cats and ending up falling in love with them. We've had them since they were a month old!
Bella - my youngest kitty - a little over a year old - I got from my friend's house. She was outside and just skin and bones when I brought her home. Now she's FAT and loved!
I just accept that I can't get/take in/be adopted by any more cats until these are gone. So far, I have successfully found homes for three abandoned/strays that thought they would move in. This is sad to me because the "cat culture" in my house is attention-loving and extremely affectionate--and when you bring in a kitten, the next generation learns how to behave teh same way from their elders. Merlin, in particular, though younger than Tom, has had a huge influence--a lap cat to the nth degree!
Oops! Here he comes for a mama-love-belly-rub right now....
1. Gavin - pet store (I know, bad of me, but I was young and stupid)
2. Ginger - pet store (still young and stupid)
3. Fabio - Ginger's kitten
4. Princess - Ginger's kitten
5. Piggy - Ginger's kitten
6. Cali - Ginger's kitten
7. Eos - a friend's cat had 7 kittens and she didn't know what to do with them so I got conned into giving one a home but I'm glad I did now
8. Phoenix aka Stinky - I was working on an audit in the boon docks and as we were leaving we heard this loud crying that sounded like a baby, well it turned out to be a kitten who looked practically starved and was hiding under some logging equipment. I ruined my work pants by crawling in the mud under the machinery to pull her out. There was what looked like a mother cat and another kitten running around, but they must have been well fed because they moved WAY too fast for me to catch them. So off I went with one new kitten. I had planned on taking her to a local no kill shelter, but they were full and I couldn't con anyone into giving her a home, so she stayed with us.
High fives put him into the belly crawl of fear. We don't do them anymore. And the old green camo and black boots uniform. He would sit and growl. Thank God they don't use them mush anymore.
My current cat family includes Scipio (age 15) along with Marius (age 10 approx.) and Tiberius (age 5). Marius and Tiberius were strays.
Oreo adopted us. He picked our backyard for shelter. He was very scared of humans at first and subsisted on lizards. My daughter finally coaxed him with some kibbles and he has proven to be a very affectionate and social kitty.
ANd Deb the Humane Society is a wonderful place to adopt a pet!!!

Indigo came from a home near Palmyra, WI. The young woman lived in an upper flat in her parents' house and had several Siamese cats. Indigo (blue point) was the last kitten to be sold, and she said she was going to alter the parents. Indigo was sleeping in a dresser drawer when we arrived and was sweet and sleepy. He slept on my lap on the trip home and didn't understand why the twins didn't like him at first.
Today, Indigo still likes to get into a drawer if he can, but he's just too big. If I open the bottom drawer in the bathroom cabinet, he sit in there for awhile, then leave when I ask him to.
Rasputin and Tarot are a bit more reserved and quite shy with strangers, but they have their own ways and habits that we love. They both love to be petted and talked to and remain very attached to each other.
None of them like to be picked up involuntarily. They are all altered.
Mugwort is on loan from Beth. He came out from under her car one summer day and demanded to be adopted. She tried to locate owners, but apparently he was a dumpee. None of us could understand that because he was so beautiful, smart, and talkative. He is truly Mr. Personality!
Keeker, is a Calico cat that I found under my hubby's shed. She was so tiny she fit in the palm of my hand with room left over. It took me 3 days to get to be able to touch her and pick her up. She would run when she saw me.
Love is the boxer that belongs to my oldest granddaughter. She lives in an apartment and couldn't keep Love so hubby said "We'll take her home with us!" She is still the one to pay all vet bills, but we are the ones that get the love from Love.
Pearl came from a coworker who was moving in with her allergice-to-cats sister.
Jake came from a family who did not have the resources to care for him; my daughter's friend asked us to take him.
