In Need of Photoshop Help

Well, I am new to Photoshop.  I purchased it a while ago, but just installed it.  I have looked through the booklet and in the help files, but I still can't figure out how to edit something out of a photo.  I have figured out how to take something out, but then I end up with a white area, where it use to be.  I've tried a few things, but nothing seems to be working.  Some seem to make it worse.

I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Mac.

I am becoming very frustrated and beginning to wonder why I spent so much money on this.

Can anyone help me out?  Or point me to an article or website that could help me?  It would be greatly appreciated.

Wish I could help you on this. I am trying to figure out the same trick! I have some baby photos of my kids and I want to take my ex-husband out of them (he was abusive).

The best way is to use the clone tool to cover up whatever you want to hide. Here's a quick article to help:

This Missing Manual Series has a manual for Photoshop that is excellent. This book is my bible, and I got it on Amazon used and therefor cheap, cheap, cheap

Using the clone tool is usually the way to go, but every situation is different. If the object you are trying to hide is surrounded by a large somewhat uniform background, it might be easier to select and copy a different portion of the shot and paste it over the offending item. Use the lasso to select an irregular shape (rather than a circle or rectangle). Feather your selection so you don't have a hard edge. Copy your selection, then holding down the option key, drag it over whatever you are trying to hide. The best thing to do is experiment. You can often learn far more through trial and error than in a classroom.

Post the photos and I'll give it a shot, I mean if you feel comfortable doing so. I bet some of these other Photo-shoppers might even help.
Although I do not use Photo Shop I use Arc Soft Photo Studio, much simpler and a lot less expensive.

Experiment with photoshop. Make a copy of your good photo, and play around with it. You can always delete it, and begin again. Don't be afraid to play!
I use photoshop CS3, and i'm always looking up things and playing around with it.
