Talina N. published an article at http://www.gather.com:80/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977149365 about Google's web page translator at http://www.google.com/translate_t and I made the comment that machine translation is still in its infancy. To give an example, I have three different English/Russian and back machine programs that will give different results. There are some phrases and words that do not translate well and the dictionary must be huge. Syntax is also a major problem.
For example, the phrase "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back":
In Google: (free)
БыÑтрый коричневый лиÑа перепрыгнули через ленивых Ñобак Ñпине
In IMTranslator: (free)
БыÑÑ‚Ñ€Ð°Ñ ÐºÐ¾Ñ€Ð¸Ñ‡Ð½ÐµÐ²Ð°Ñ Ð»Ð¸Ñа перепрыгнула через Ñпину ленивой Ñобаки
In @Promt: (not free)
БыÑÑ‚Ñ€Ð°Ñ ÐºÐ¾Ñ€Ð¸Ñ‡Ð½ÐµÐ²Ð°Ñ Ð»Ð¸Ñа перепрыгнула через Ñпину ленивой Ñобаки
Note that the last two are the same. That's because the IMTranslator is written by @Promt which is a Russian company.
