You can't catch the flu from the flu shot!

You really can't catch the flu from the flu shot! The injected flu shot is made from a killed virus and the nasal spray is a weakened live virus. But even though the nasal spray is live its impossible for a healthy person to get sick.

Possible side effects from the injected vaccine include:

  • Soreness, redness or pain at the injection site
  • Low grade fever
  • Body aches


These side effects usually occur soon after the vaccine is administered and last 1-2 days. On very rare occasions, a severe or life-threatening reaction may occur called Guillain-Barré syndrome.

 

Possible side effects from the nasal vaccine include:

  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Nausea and vomiting (in children)
  • Fever (in children)
  • Muscle aches


Because the nasal flu vaccine is a weakened live virus, people in close contact with people who have severely weakened immune systems should not get the nasal flu vaccine.

The only problem with the flu shot, etc. is the fact that it is last years strain. The flu virus mutates every year so this years strain is different from last years. I haven't made up my mind if it would be worth it for me or not. The one year I did go get the shot, I still ended up with the flu.

I do get mine every year...I have asthma and if I were to get the flu it could kill me. They have it free to get for the people that need it and their families. This year its not so accessible.

I don't know what happened Judi...but I am glad you are okay.

The agency I work for recommends that all employees get this vaccine. I plan on getting it this year.

Taylor ~ (I adore your "My Real Name Is" icon, lol.) I was told to get the flu vaccine, the effects not being what they used to be. Before, they used a live virus and now they don't. This nurse said whatever slight side effects came from the new vaccine were easier on people (having a heart condition) than effects of the flu. Thanks for this info!

I've never had a flu shot...and I've aged into that over 50 group. It is just hard for me to go in and volunteer for a shot.

It is NOT impossible to get the flu from a vaccine, it may be unlikely, but not impossible. Why do you think they would not give the nasal vaccine to some people? Flu vaccines are really not needed. BTW someone who is vaccinated could pass the flu onto someone who was not (if they received the live virus). I have actually had a puppy contract Parvo from being in contact with littermates that were vaccinated using a live virus.

I've gotten the flu shot at work the last two years and have never had a problem. I guess it's all how your body reacts to it.

i dont get the flu shot. the symptoms scare the heck out of me. so i stay out of crowds. wash my hands. and dont lend my pen out!

I get one every year- it makes me feel pretty bad for about a day, but it beats getting the flu

NOPE NOPE NOPE still not going to do it. My sister & her family got the shots and were sick the whole winter!!! Nobody else got the shot and we were all fine!

I get the flu shot at work every year and have never had a problem and the kids get theirs every year and do fine. They are considered high-risk since they both had pneumonia (sp?) as babies.

Yes, got the sore arm and muscle aches for 2 days, but better than the flu!
