As I've noted before, because of the effect of the Atlantic Ocean, and especially the Gulf Stream, on Newport, we don't get the magnificent Fall foliage that they get inland. We do get some color, mostly the Maples which turn all sorts of incandescent red, orange, and yellow. Some Beeches go a pale yellow before turning brown, and various ivies and vines turn color. But by and large most of the green just pales, goes dusty-looking, and eventually fades to brown.
So on today's hike I made sure to look out for autumnal color. Here's the result. Oh, and a note - no I didn't boost the Fall color in these, as I did in that article earlier in the week. this is as I saw it.

That's what the colors look like in Newport this weekend. When they get more intense (and they will), I'll keep you posted.

Beautiful essay Roy.
Deb, if you've had a dry year down there the colors WILL be less vivid. I'm noticing that we're behind schedule up here, too, and some of the Maples are spotting rather than changing color, and we've had a dry Summer and Fall indeed.

It has been so dry here that many leaves are falling while still green. It is a strange fall here.
