When Soloman prayed for wisdom. he did so, possably, only because, everything else, for which one might pray, he, already possessed. He was the favored son of the king, and chosen one.
He need not compete for the throne. That was assured through the bedroom politics of his mother, Bethsheba. All the wives strove diligently to , on behalf of their offspring, and position.
Tradition had it, that another son would inheret the throne, as the eldest son, but, Bethsheba wrangled a promise from her husband, the king. A spoken promise, whereby King David swore to Bethsheba, by God, that her son, Soloman, would inheret the throne.
King David did have a weakness to be impulsive, when it came to Bethshba. He had already commited adultry with her, and murdered her husband in order to have her.
So, a king having promised, with his word, and sworn by God, must keep that word.
So, Soloman was given everything. First, he was reared in luxery from his birth, and then he inhereted the rulersip of the kingdom. Now, he needed the smarts to work it. He did want to keep it, afterall.
Where did Soloman's wisdom truly lie? Not in the judgements made, daily, for the in the lives of the ruled of Isreal. The big important matter was the kingdom and it's proserity, and advancement. He not only wanted to keep it, he wanted to make it bigger, and more powerul.
He was wise to set about executing those who might have some legitemate objection to his having inhereted the throne. He even executed his brother, who was the traditional heir. This stopped any future uprisings from ever occurring. Then, as his father had directed him to do, he exterminated all of his fathers past enemies. These being the many who thought David, had stolen the throne from King Saul. Not many are aware that there was an ongoing conflict about that. As Saul was also chosen. In short, he eliminated all possable, "nay-sayers".
He then set out, and successfully made numerous alliances with foreign kings/kingdoms. Hence, the many wives, as it was very customary to seal deals with a marriage.
His wealth and power grew immeasurably. This was the wisdom for which he prayed. The wisdom to make very good deals in business, politics, and power.
As his father, before him, he had a way with words.
He was born into a life of excess, and he continued that throughout his days.
In his day, he was much more renown throughout the woeld, for his business savvy, than he ever was for his so-called wisdom concerning a quarrel between two women over a baby. The only reason this story got any fanfare at all was it's shock value.
Like a tabloid story, the very words, "CUT THE CHILD INTO WITH A SWORD", has such sensationalistic shock value, these days, it could have even made The Jerry Springer Show.
