Columbus Day: Are you off today?

Today, October 12th, is Columbus Day. In the USA it is officially commemorated on the 2nd Monday in October, so it was this week on Monday, the 8th. However, I understand that some schools, banks, etc. do take today off?

In Latin America usually it's on the 12th and it's a national holiday: no school, no work.

Do you work today? If you're a student, do you have school?

We moved the day off to monday in order to make a long weekend, so we do work today

Normally I would be at work today - I worked out last night so technically I'm off today (although I still have a 5 hour drive home ahead of me).

I'm always working when it comes to gather! LOL Seriously, it's another day in our house. My boys are going to school as usual and I have the typical Friday things to do....Here's hoping you have a great weekend! :-D

Nope, I'm at work today. We had work on Monday as well. All the banks and the post offices and such were closed Monday, but everything is just another day today.

You're kidding, right? Not in my office, we get Christmas, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Thanksgiving Day. That's it. If you want thirteen holidays off, go work for the government.

I have never heard of Columbus day,
it must be to celebrate the day Columbus discovered America.
Living in the UK we don't hear of these things.

This one holiday that needs to be aolished! It is an affront to native Americans in all of the Americas! It also not true that this moron "discovered" America! He was a "johhny come lately"....the Vikings, the Welsh & the Irish all had been here way before 1492! An group of Irish monks lanaded in Florida near present day St. Augustine & founded a monastery. It of course died out in tiem because they were monks! We all know about Lief Erikson & the Vikings who were in the new England & Nova Scotia areas of North America. The Welsh under the leadership of Prince Madoc ended up near present day Mobile-Alabama & went from there up into present day Missouri & Nebraska. All of this was done hundreds of years prior to CC coming upon the scene!

Donald - Do you realize that the Indians take off "Indian Day" in leiu of Columbus Day? It is usually the Friday before Columbus Day.

I was off on Columbus day but then again I have been off work (unemployed) for a very long time so every day is like a holiday for me...
