Do you still shop the Dollar Stores now that many products made in China are being recalled?

I'll admit it I am a big fan of the "Dollar Stores". I think it is because I can find things for $1.00.

Now I know most of it I do not really need, and most of it is cheaply made.  But still I can get it for $1.00! ;-)

 I saw "Dollar Tree" opened a new store, very close to where I live.

The thrill of the find, the excitment of the hunt -got the best of me I guess, so I went in.

I picked up a few items a nice basket to put christmas cards in, a nice basket to use for thanksgiving -maybe for silverware.

I have a mild concern as all that I picked up has been made in China.

I think my mind has gotten the best of me, and I am worring unneccessarily with all the recalls on China-made products. I have a mild concern that these porducts could be unsafe.

Do you still shop at the Dollar Stores or has concern over lead-based paint, and possibly recalls made you stay away?

Hi Jennifer, I agree with you, as I sit here looking at my $1.00 finds from yesterday. part of me thinks don't worry, part of me thinks don't use this stuff.

I wouldn't be quick to only judge Dollar Tree or Dollar stores in general. MANY and I repeat MANY of the recalls you could have easily gotten from Walmart, Target, Kmart, etc. I am worried about ANYTHING made from china. In fact I bought a Fairly Odd parents set of small chairs a few months back at a yard sale, and yep made in CHina. So I am worried. I worry about the jewelry my daughter has, because frankly I have no idea where it was made at.

I still shop dollar tree. The one I shop at has a frozen foods section. I get alot of good deals.

I still shop at dollar stores. It's almost the only place I CAN afford to shop!

Day Dreamer the recall on the toothpaste that was manufactured in China has been found to contain diethylene glycol.
Diethylene glycol is found in antifreeze and can cause liver and kidney damage.

I don't purchase Health and beauty aids at the dollar store.

Sandi, I was not juding the Dollar Stores, as I was looking at the tag on my basket, while it is made for and sold by an American company it manufactured by a Company in China. I statted to think about leas paint and my mind worked overtime, you are correct the recalls could have come from anywhere.

We have like 5 of the various dollar stores within a 15 minute ride so I do make dollar store trips. I think the tainted paint will be all over though, and most people will have to watch this holiday season.

It brings a whole new light to the thought of buy American made. I will diffidently think twice now about buying things I don't really need. Perhaps buying one item of value is always better.

I work in the Chemical Regulatory Compliance industry (yes, there IS one of these industries!), and I avoid all products from China. I could tell you horror stories. Sometimes though, the ONLY place some products are made are in China!
There's also a terribly fine and painful line when it comes to children's toys. The overwhelming majority of children's toys are made in China, and it's extremely difficult to tell your child he can't have ANY Thomas & Friends toys because they are ALL made in China.
However, the good news is the dangerous chemicals used are usually only dangerous if they are ingested. So as long as your child - or siblings - aren't mouthing toys, or you can somehow keep them away from mouthing babies, then the risk is fairly low. Better safe than sorry though!
