I have written before about losing my job in August and the trouble I've had getting a new job. I have been accepted as a substitute teacher for the parish (county anywhere else) school system. Any hints for success as a substitute teacher? Any do's and don'ts? I'm mostly substituting for elementary schools. Tomorrow is my first assignment...1st grade!

I am a school teacher..I teach grade 3 and 4..It is fun..but you need to feel ready at anytime..just don't give up and rest well during the weekends..
Be an actor, singer, dancer, and a teacher..in the class..students love that..
Besides that maybe a big bag of candy?lol
Believe it or not, I taught fourth grade in a temporary position for about 4 months. I found that I had to keep a firm hand or there would be chaos. Yet at the same time, I tried to get down on their level, so to speak. In the end, when I left the classroom on the last day, it was the three kids I had the most trouble, thus the firmest with, who were actually hanging on to me, begging me to stay.
Rima, I hope I can live up to all that!
Bonnie, we're not allowed to bring any food - but that's tempting!
Karen, puppets are a great idea!
Lainie, good advice!
Anya, I hope I have a lesson plan to keep them busy!
Robb, you strike me as a perfect teacher...
Great tips, Marilyn!
Bert, your words really speak to me...thanks!
Reena, you're making me nervous!
Jane, I'm hoping for a good lesson plan, too!
Excellent, Joyce!
Thanks, Michelle
Donna, you're a great help!
Shannon, I do that anyway...LOL!
Always go early and read the lesson plan and try to follow it as closely as possible. If there is something you aren't sure about, ask another teacher (many teachers will leave you the name and room number of a teacher that can help). Don't be afraid to ask for help. Make sure that you leave your name and contact information so they can ask you any necessary questions and so they can request you or recommend you to other teachers. My work after the second week of subbing was all for teachers that had requested to have me because they were happy with my work for them or for other teachers. That helped me because I would usually know ahead of time who I would be working for.
Just be flexible and confident. Enjoy the kids.
First graders don't normally have the same behavior problems the other grades do. They'll talk to each other, maybe goof around, but they're usually not too hard to control.
They're eager to please at that age, so try to find something to praise each child for.
Handing out stickers for rewards can be very effective. But if you hand out dogs, prepare for barking, cats will get meows and just forget dinosaurs! LOL! My recommendation would be a sticker that can't be fodder for noise. :)
Do you have a little tinkly bell? You can use that to ask for quiet, rather than raising your voice. Something novel that is actually pleasant works better than yelling or loud things. One group around here has a particular clap pattern that all the kids have to do that signals quiet (like a dash-dash-dot-dot-dot kind of thing). That seems to work.
Have a plan in mind for various events. Think of everything that could possibly happen, and have a plan ready. That way if it does happen, you won't be flustered and trying to think on your feet. If it doesn't happen, you'll be happy. :)
I agree with Judi's comments, too. :)
Good luck. I'm sure you'll do GREAT!
So don't be like him! Don't be sarcastic. Don't pick favorites. Do tell the kids why you are there and how long you expect to be there, if you know. There will always be some in the class who will step up and be helpful. That's great--just don't let them run things.
Our class, as a group, respectfully asked our teacher to request "anyone but Mr. Goodman" in future, and she did make a note of that.
start off ... the way you intend to continue .....
Ron, it's Jefferson Parish - a little better...my husband's not too happy about it!
Judi, I hope I can keep from letting them see me sweat! LOL!

JK, I don't think I'll have THAT problem!
Good luck.
How in the world do I strike you as the "perfect teacher?" I would really like to know, even if it is a mistaken illusion.
Keep us posted!
