Things are very different this time around. I think that Jimmy Carter called it right.

I fail to see how Mr. Carters comments have anything to do with his administration.

Jimmy Carter was not a bad president. He had some challenges that Reagan didn't for one thing. Reagan had to go back on his tax cuts and then became involved in the Iran Contra affair. It's pretty difficult not to recognize Reagan for what he is.

Jimmy Carter and his ideas chased my husband out of the military. He had eight years in and was willing to stay until he saw what Carter was going to do to the military and he left.
Joe T., you say he was not a bad president, well, he wasn't a good one either.
As a public figure and ex-president, he should not be openly speaking badly about anyone in the present administration. It's just bad form. Maybe we have to excuse him as he is old and maybe he is suffering from a touch of dimentia, causing him to speak when he should not.

Maybe it is because President Carter knows he isn't known as The Best President ever that he is, indeed qualified to make the judgment.

Whatever you may think about him personally, Carter's post-presidential reputation is pretty close to impeccable.

Something tells me the day will come when [many] more dignitaries (including ex-presidents) will be more forthcoming with their true feelings about the Bush-Cheney years.

At least we don't have gas lines and rationing. I think he should just stay focused building houses for habitat for humanity. His IQ is better suited for that anyways.

Actually, Christene, if you took your head out of your ass where you like to listen to Fox News, you might have learned that Dear Leader Bush II has surpassed Carter (and all other recent Presidents) as the "worst" in USA Today polling.

It was announced about five months ago, before the latest trough in Bush support.

Obviously you Patriots were not in the military during those years, however, Carter proved himself to be the WORST Commander in Chief even more so than Clinton.
He made the military his 'whipping boy' and dessimated the military by cutting back funding to where there was no money for fuel, spare parts, training making military life even more difficult than before. This is a big reason why the military could do nothing
about the Iranian hostage situation.
Those who volunteered to stay in the military under Carter were sorry they did. Carter was more interested in funding his pet projects rather than providing for his military and its personnel and that was his (and many others) reasons for leaving.
The bunch of you who have voiced your nasty insinuations should be very ashamed of yourselves. How many of you actually volunteered to enter the military during the Vietnam years? But then again, you don't seem to have much use for the brave men and women who are volunteering to enter the military today do you.
By the way, just so you fully understand the years of service, my husband entered the army in 1972 While the war was still going on, and left in 1980.

And by the way "Don't ask, don't tell" was a Clinton brainstorm that fully ticked off the top brass of the military further showing HIS disdain for his armed forces.

My brother the conservative Republican lasted just fine through the Carter administration in the military (and a few other administrations) so I'm still also wondering why your husband had to leave.

Good for your brother. My husband CHOSE to leave as he did not like the frustration of not being able to supply his men with what they needed. You don't sign up your life for another 4 years if you don't see things improving. Maybe the problem at the time was that my husband was back then an Democrat.

There was no military solution to the hostage crisis. It was an embassy in a country where we had diplomatic relations. It is entirely wrong to think that all problems can be solved with ammunition and a gun. The hostage crisis was tragic but wasn't solvable by the military.

You are wrong. The volunteer services did not work too well in the beginning, Chive. Carter just happened to be the president at the time. It is true that the economy went south under Carter but the military did not suffer because of any actions of the Carter administration. He didn't cut and run. He had a difficult situation with the hostage crisis. Reagan would not have done a better job.

My brother stayed in because he believed in defending his country even when it got hard. He believed he had made a commitment and he stuck to it. Even when he was in the hospital with a chronic back problem (a few years before he was to retire out) he and his friends went around to the other wards to see what the patients (soldiers) needed. They scrounged stuff to make sure their fellow soldiers had the best they could get even while in the hospital themselves.
My brother and I don't see eye to eye on most issues, but he's no quitter and I'm very proud of him.
