What are heteronyms?

Heteronyms are words that are spelled identically but have different meanings when pronounced differently. 

 Examples:

Lead, pronounced LEED, means to guide. However, lead, pronounced LED, means a metallic element.
 

Bass pronounced BASE- means a string instrument; (rhymes with mass)- a fish

Minute MINNit- 60 seconds; myNOOT- tiny
