Surviving the Boston meltdown

October 09, 2007 09:50 PM EDT (Updated: October 10, 2007 09:31 PM EDT)
views: 472 | rating: 9.8/10 (109 votes) | comments: 147

I’d like to blame it on my wife’s shoes, or even global warming, but when it comes to the Boston Meltdown, the fault -- as usual – lies with my own stupidity.

That’s too bad, because I’d really been looking forward to that particular reading and signing. We’d be in a great city. We’d see friends and relatives. And best of all, I’d be able to thank many Gather members who supported me in the First Chapters contest, not to mention staffers who’d been so helpful in promoting “The Way Life Should Be.”

So maybe I panicked.

All I remember is slowwwwwly walking through a city park in unseasonably humid 90 degree weather. It was pushing 1 o’clock and I’d been due at 12:45. Meanwhile, Beth was walking with her brother, Bobby, and moving at two-thirds her usual pace, probably because her fantastic-looking shoes served no practical purpose. (I made a note to throw them out the car window once we were leaving town and going at least 80 mph.)

“How much farther?” I asked.

“Fifteen minutes” was the same answer I’d gotten 15 minutes earlier. My brother-in-law has his own sense of time, which comes from being brilliant enough to retire at age 50.

Me? Well, let’s just say I’ll be working till the day I die, which suddenly seemed imminent. As you might have guessed, I’ve never been particularly calm or patient.

“I have to run,” I finally said, and that’s what I foolishly did.

In my defense, I’m not sure a humid 90 degrees is the same to me as it once was. My wife and I now live in the South, where it’s always a humid 90 degrees, which means we never leave air conditioning. And we certainly don’t leave it to do something as crazy as trying to walk anywhere – let alone run.

During those 15 awful blocks, around pedestrians and through crowded crosswalks, I began to realize this may not have been the best idea. Maybe it was the looks people were giving me. They probably thought I was fleeing a crime scene. By the time I reached the School Street Borders, I realized just how much I’d perspired. That’s when I began to hope I really would be mistaken for a criminal and one of Boston’s finest would shoot me down.

No such luck.

Since I’ve always viewed my life as a situation comedy, I figured I’d play it for a cheap laugh.

Not with this crowd.

They were either too stunned, too polite to acknowledge my hideous condition, or like the guy in row five, too engrossed in reading another book to pay attention.

Ever see Broadcast News? You know, the scene where Albert Brooks gets his big break as a substitute anchor and sweats through his suit and makeup? I made him look cool and collected.

To top it off, my sweating had only gotten worse. Of the 16 readings I’ve given, never have so many people looked me so directly in the eyes. God bless them. We soldiered on together.

Afterward, when I met Gather President Carl Rosendorf, who looked like he’d stepped out of the pages of GQ magazine, I wanted to apologize, but he didn’t give me a chance. He was charming and gracious and for a moment I didn’t feel like crawling under the table. Carl even shook my hand – without benefit of a towel, mind you.

Several Gather friends did as well, including Liz Goodwin, who has been my main contact with the staff. Liz is tiny and angelic and looks like she has never perspired in her life. (Okay, she did post pictures from this event, so maybe she’s not so angelic after all.)

A few hours later, I did a live chat at the Gather offices. But don’t worry, I made sure to change and shower first, and put on shorts and sandals and to walk very slowwwwly the entire way to the building.

Everyone there was so nice and young and enthusiastic that I just wanted to hug them. Of course, knowing how badly I’d melted down earlier, none of them were foolish enough to get near me.

Yeah Terry you said so on the phone that day, and I thought, he didn't wear a complete supplex nylon outfit. Visit Ex Officio and spend some of the dough on a sweatproof sporty outfit. I'm a wilderness man. I know this stuff. Cotton is your enemy my friend. Remember it. Nice job regardless. Tough under fire, is the credo for the new writer. Or on fire.

Terry - I can only imagine you running for 15 blocks in 90 degree humidity!!

You must have been blood red in the face from the run let alone from the exertion. I wouldn't think that your appearance made any difference to those who were there to meet you and hear about your wonderful book!!

I only wish I had been there to see you, lol! Just laughing with you, not at you but glad you got a chance to "freshen up" before you got to Gather.

Thanks for the heads up on this experience of yours. (By the way, I hope you haven't thrown out your wife's shoes...lol!)

Terry, Sorry you had this nightmarish experience. But, what a wonderful tale to tell to others. Laughter is the best medicine, even when we have to laugh at our own antics. After all, all crying will do is give you a red runny nose, red swollen eyes, and a nasal twang. Loved the delightful telling of a woeful tale.

Terry, you have such a way with words! This was at once funny and mortifying and I feel for you. But it sounds like it went better than you feared it would, given your condition. Don't you just love our weather up here? Thankfully, I live west of Boston in a nice little town tucked into a valley, so we didn't have quite the amount of humidity as in the city. Here's hoping your next visit to Boston will be less stressful!

Hi Terry!

I was drinking my morning coffee as I read your humorous piece. . .and, due to laughter, I spilled the brown liquid all over my pink nightgown. . .ugly, ugly stains. . .but well worth it!

But just a minute here. I have a few questions. Doesn't Boston have public transportation? A grimy yellow cab, maybe? A crowded, hot, smelly bus? Better yet, you're the big winner on Gather.com. . .couldn't they provide a nice stretch limo? The President obviously arrived at the event looking like a suave, debonair man. . .no room in his limo?

Ignore my sarcasm. . .I did enjoy this piece immensely, and as a few others have pointed out, those little embarrassing moments of life provide great meat for us writers!

Have a stupendous day!
Catherine

Hey Terry, I was at Borders/ Boston during your reading. You pulled it off just fine with damp shirt etal. Enjoyed your read much more than that guy in the 5th row reading OJ's IF I DID IT...What I don't understand about your Mini- Boston Marathon is how your wife, Beth, could arrive 15 minutes before you. Did she do a Rosie Ruiz and take a subway?
Best with the rest.

Bill,
I actually beat Beth and Bobby to the store, but was in the downstairs employee restroom, trying to dry off with the hand towels. It obviously didn't work.

Okay, Terry...the towel off explained the delay. Beth did not clone Rosie Ruitz. Next time try the MTA. .. Like Charlie...Through the streets of Boston...will he ever return?...Hope you return to a cooler Boston, Terry, with a best seller.

LOL, I wondered if you might write an article about the signing. It was unusually hot...pretty warm even by mid-July's standards. But you didn't miss a beat!

LOL... Well Terri... I think you might have a career in the advertising business. You just created a great ad for some deodorant company I'm sure!!!!!!! Sorry it wasn't as cool and calm as you had hoped... but the good part is... most successful authors are a bit "strange" anyways.... so to this crowd you fit the bill perfect!!!!

Ah, but you survived Terry. Being in the south myself, I do understand what you mean by sweating in 90 degree humid temps. We're still doing that here, even though its Oct 10th already.

Great, Terry! I must say you handle making a clown of yourself very well, but I think its time you get a new administrative assistant.

This was so much fun to read. At least you acknowledge you tend to shoot yourself in the foot at times. Dont we all? So glad you are having fun with this. Leave Beth's shoes alone, Terry...lol.

I wondered why you looked so wet in the video. I thought maybe you'd run through a sprinkler or took a dunk in a fountain. What....no one told you Boston was humid... ;-)))
