Ok here's the deal. I live in Mid Michigan. The only electric company and gas carrier out here is Consumers Energy. Well last month someone from the gas company came out and disconnected my gas. I did not realize thats what happened until a few day later when the landlords maintenence man came out. The maintenence man couldn't figure out why the gas wasn't working inside the home. So he went outside to look at the pipes. When he got there he noticed my gas meter was taken and there were two big "Consumers Energy Locks" on both ends. So he came back inside and said "did you pay your gas bill?" I was appauled an angry. Yes in fact I did pay my bill and I did not owe another for almost another month. My bill had not gone past due. So I call Consumers Energy and they tell me someone must have 'turned it off by mistake'. She then tells me she will have it turned on that day if I promise someone will be home. So I call into work .... I talked to this lady at 930AM and she said someone would be out between then and 11pm. Well I waited and waited ... and waited. 1130PM came and no one had been out or called me. So then I call them back. I was told they were only taking emergency calls after 7pm and I would have to call back tomorrow. So mind you this is going on day 7 where the kids and I have had no gas in the house. We had no hot water, we could not cook, we could not dry clothes .. nothing. We'd been driving many miles to my parents house so we could take showers .. and we had been going to the laundry mat to do laundry ... and buying foods we didn't need to cook or eating out. So the next day I call them and I am entirely pissed off at this point. Having no gas service in my home .. where me and my four small children live.... then I missed a days pay staying home to wait for them and they did not show up ... so once again .. Consumers says they weren't able to make it out the prior day and they were going to come today and that someone would have to be there again. They would not give me a small time frame .. like four or five hours .. they just said it could be anytime between 9AM and 1130PM. So once again I had to miss another days work and pay. So then finally around 7PM someone from Consumers comes out. He was rude and disrespectful. I never felt so angry and humiliated in all my life. So when call consumers to make a complaint about the whole ordeal .. guess what they tell me? "Mistakes happen... since we made a mistake we will credit your account $25" No I am sorry we did this to you and your family .. no we will give you what you missed in your two days wages .... no let us offer anything to help with the stress and everything else ... So me and my four kids went without gas service for 7 days, no hot water, not able to cook, not able to dry laundry, we were driving to my relatives homes for showers ... and then to top it all off I missed two days pay AND was treated like I was less than human. Had this been any where that I could switch companies or cancel service I know I would have been treated better. The fact that we do not have a choice as to whom provides the gas and electricity they knew they could treat me and my family any way they wanted to. I talked to the Sherriff's department in Flint that handles consumers affairs and he suggested a class action law suit .... to fight the monopoly. So here is where I am with this .... I am looking for others who were wronged by Consumers Energy in Michigan. I would like to file a suit against Consumers Energy and I would like to go to the governor and let her know we are not going to allow a monopoly here in Michigan.
Anyone with me please let me know .... I can give you my contact information and when I find a lawyer I think is going to be fair and do a good job with the case .... we can have a meeting of the minds and see where we can go from there and what the next step is.
This is 2007 and we WANT a choice. I refuse to be treated like a second class citizen and like I am not a valued citizen. Consumers demonstrated how heartless they could be and I want to make sure they know we are not going to stand for these actions....
Normally procedure for turning off a customers gas .. or electricity requires a written notice. then the customer is supposed to have 30 days or something ... then if the service is UNPAID then they turn the service off and pplace a tag on the gas line AND a tag on the customers door to notify them the service was shut off. This is the 'procedure' they were supposed to follow. Instead someone came out and shut mine off when my bill was current and not passed due and it took them 7 days to actually turn it back on....
Stand up Michigan and say we will not stand for a monopoly. Since we all know if we had a choice these companies prices would be more competitive and the customer service would improve.
I am going to be contacting the local tv news and the local newspapers.

Anyway- with me dealings with both companies (I don't have either right now- in Lansing, they have their own Board of Electric & Water, and gas is handled by the apartment complex), I found Consumers to be horrible.
They were anal retentive, if you ask me. I would get shut off notices if I was a day over due, and they were almost never willing to work out a deal to hold off by even 2 or 3 days until pay day. Consumers is horrible.
Unfortunatly, without moving to a new "grid", you won't be able to get a change in service provider. It really sucks how gas & electric is handled in Michigan. It's not something that is considered a monopoly, because they assign things directly. I have been told before that it's the same with cable companies here in Michigan. I don't know what it's like in other states, though.
This sentence shows you what will probably give you the most response for the least amount of money! And bother them the most too!!
Cristina ... I know the news is always my friend!!!! I told consumers when they were disrespectful and rude to me that I wrote each and every name down of everyone I talked too. I even wrote the dates and times.... I don't think they believed me until the Sherriff's department called too ... and an attorney.
Carole ... the $25 the offered was like a slap in the face. I used more than that just going to the laundry mat!!! Or even one trip to my moms to take showers for the kids and I! Then two days wages .. shoot $25 is not going to do crap. They costed me more than that!!!! Whats worse is I pay for the service and they had no reason to shut it off!!!
I hate Consumers Energy ...
