Emails from Gather Generate Points

I posted an article a while back (before my alphabet series) on how I learned that you could have emails sent to you whenever a contact has posted an article/image/video etc...  This has been so extremely useful to me.  Even though I accumulate sometimes as much as 700 emails, just answering what I can gains me more points than you would think.  I can comment quicker when just clicking on their article from my email then trying to go down the list from the gather page.  Just by doing this this morning (and not by any article I wrote) I jumped up about 50 points!  Just a quick tip for those who don't already know.

How do you do this?
Someone from Gather said that points are held back & are given to you later than when you earned them, so they could be from other things you previously did. :(

Interesting..trying to figure this out..When you click the link in the email doesn't it create new browser windows? For me that might take some time as my browser seems to get slower the more windows I open..

Jane- it's under your account and mail settings...
AH- This actually has consistently happened to me everytime I've gone through and done this, so I think it's because of this.
MC- It does open another window

Exactly what A H just said- If you did any activity over the past 2 days, then it's possible that the 50 points you did receive were from things not credited in the past.

Emails from the system to your private email box -might- generate some, but I don't think they generate much. Emails you send or receive through your gather "mail" account are more likely to give points, but again, I doubt they give much.

If you want to run a true experiement, you would want to make sure you didn't do anything except the emails for around a week's time, and see if your points still go up. That would be a more true test of the system.

yes AH I think you're right..on Oct 29 I did a ton of comments in an hours time and points barely budged over the next 24 hrs, they went up maybe 2 pts every so often for the day..weird.
BTW, it is a good tip to get to your contacts info faster, regardless. I meant to say that before.

Interesting.
I've noticed the same things with my points, where I'll be posting pretty much all day and/or night & they will hardly go up. Then the next day they are a lot higher.
I have seen someone from Gather post about what I said too, I'll see if I can find it in a bit.

I don't have this function on, as I couldn't keep up with all the notifications. Now I just click on the namespace for everyone who comments on my stuff.

I don't think you get points for posting articles and pictures, I think you get them from the comments you get and/or the comments you make on other's stuff! I could be wrong though!

Jane, was your question answered? You go to your MY Gather and click on email settings at the bottom. You can fix it there. As soon as I clicked on "save" I went to my email box and had 10 emails already waiting.

I'd go insane if I got THAT many emails at once. :) But if it seems to work for you.... I'd also encourage you to do that Heather suggested and try ONLY your email system for a week to see what happens with your points.

I don't use this either. I also try to comment on everyone who comments on my work, then I go through the aricles for me, written by my connections. Now, when a connection does not show up on anything of mine for a while, I do stop visiting theirs and block their e-mails also after a while.

I don't think Sarah is saying she actually gets points for the emails. She is sayng she gets the notice someone has commented on something of hers more quickly with the emails and it allows her to go directly to that photo or article to comment back. Is that right Sarah?

I'm sure I have lost a few connections that way Katie. I some times go out of town or get sick and can't get to everything. I've given up trying to reciprocate constantly. I just hope most of my connections are more considerate. I eventually get to them in the long run. My life is not on Gather even though I do spend a lot of time here.

Awww, ppl shouldn't disconnect just because you haven't been able to post in awhile. It happens to all of us. It's hard to keep up w/Gather.

Thanks Allie. I never give up on anyone. I just keep pluggin' away at it. I have noticed people who used to be on my connection list will not be there anymore and I guess that's why.
I am not on Gather just for the points at all.

Thanks. I figured that it was the commenting on the articles that gained points, but it would be cool to receive them just by using the email system. I just can't see a company making earning points *that* easy.

Sorry, if I confused anyone.... I get an email notice saying that my connection has posted an article and it allows me to click on something and go to their article. I am able to answer them a lot quicker this way.

With the new internet version, you can right click the link and choose 'Open in New Tab'. It's easier to navigate the tabs compare to various opened windows.

I didnt think about it that way, but I did add the email option for a different reason. As I started adding more friends I found I was missing a lot of really great content that they wrote because the first glimpse of what I see on my article page changed so quickly. With the emails I could go through and see what caught my eye, starting noticing more stuff that I liked. Is especially true when you think about the different times ppl get on here and post. I don't get on till late evenings and several ppl post early am, their stuff is buried by then.

I had no idea.

Even though I have been here on Gather for over a year now, I still don't know all of the tricks of the trade. It took me a year to earn 100.00 on Gather. I have GOT to figure out how to do Gather and make it work for me.

If you are worried about getting too many emails and cluttering your inbox just make a new email address for gather. Hotmail and yahoo are super easy to set up quick. Something as easy as BarbisGather@hotmail.com then when you are in the Gathering mood just go check that email out.
