Oak Island, North Carolina is a little known paradise nestled off the East coast between Mrytle Beach, SC and Wilmington, NC. A small barrier island of only about 20 square miles. Yet, it is the home to dolphins and logger heads, ghost crabs, gators and fowl of all sorts!
After having lived in four states in five years, I would have to say that Oak Island is one of my favorite places! And I long to return to my paradise lost!

I got to witness some of the most magnificant sunsets. Like these, untouched but by the hands of nature, on Long Beach.

Nature's Art Work

Sunrise strolling on the shore.

The view from my deck as I enjoyed an amazing sunset. The picture doesn't due the colors justice! Everything had an incredible hue to it and the sea even went pink! It was beautiful.
I also loved to stoll the shore after storms and see what the waves had washed up.

There were shells of all kinds, from snails to drills and my favorites the olive shell that reminds me of an old style urn. Chip like's the nautilus best. Do you have a favorite? As you can see there was not another soul around for miles. Paradise.
Blue Point Marina and the 40th St. bridge were a couple of my favorite haunts and was always sure to see something that would catch my eye.

An orange sunset or perhaps
White Heron crane on the creek or the visiting gator in the intercoastal waterway.

There were roads less traveled and many wonderful live oak and cypress.

PD girl loved the beach and one of her favorite pastimes was chasing ghost crabs. SOmetimes it was hard to figure out who was actually in control. It was a wonderful dance to watch unfold.

What do you think he is thinking right now? "Move me up one on the food chain!!
Sadly times are changing on the island and it is all to evident as the little cottages make way for the million dollar vacation homes as is seen by the tearing down of Long Beach Pier to build condos! It was once the longest pier in North Carolina. You can see the truck on the end as they start to tear it down. Less than 2 acres of land sold for more than 9 million!

Thank you for sharing a with me a stroll around one of my favorite places!

Yes it is sadly changing and perhaps I left just in time to be able to remember before the change. We were there for a little over three years and I could already see the change. My elderly neighbor, who had hoped to retire fulltime to her beachfront home instead had to begin renting her home for the summer season just to be able to pay the taxes. She had bought in the late 60 early 70s and the value suddenly jumped from 70,000 (what she had paid) to 450,000 and then 780,000. with in two years! So you are very right, Col. changeis coming to the islandandit isn't all good.
Danny I have always loved trees and even though my early youth was in the city of Boston (an area known as JP to any Bostonians out there) I had the Forest Hills Cemetry right behind our street, which I loved to explore and the Arbs (Aronld Arboretum) just down the street which is a massive perserve with trees form around the world.A marvelous place and a MUST see if you're in the Boston area. The best part is it is FREE. I would spend countless hours with friends there as well.
And you capture it very romantically.
I love nature too!!
Cheers
