With a population of around 800, Glurns is the smallest city in Italy. It is completely enclosed by its ancient walls, dating from the 1580s. The city itself was first mentioned in 1163. Starting in the 1970s, many of the old houses have been restored, making it a very beautiful place indeed!
I have been there often, and thought I would share some pictures from a recent trip!
Here we are approaching the wall and one of the watch towers.
Walking through the gate, we see the first houses: a small hotel

and the house of a wood carver. Notice the window!

As we walk along, we come to the city center and the market square. What an amazing false front! Later in the day there will be many tourists enjoying Pasta, Pizza and Gelati, but for now, the tables are still waiting.

Across from the restaurant is a small chapel. Detail on the entrance arch.
The arch from the inside:
One of the windows
An upper window
and here the ceiling.
View of the wall behind the altar.
There are many enclosed courtyards. You can look in here!

Flowers adorn many windows...

And there are imaginative signs!

In both Italian and German.
The wall from the inside. There is a gallery that runs along the inside, and parts of it have been restored.

Very narrow street along the wall
Climb up with me!

and have a look!

From up here, we can see the surrounding countryside!

There is another little church outside the walls.

and green meadows...

The city limits proper are no longer confined to the walls, and living outside has the benefit of having the freedom to build with less regulation. Everything that is built within the walls has to conform to very strict codes, giving the city a unified look and feeling.
Returning to the central square, we come to another of the massive watch towers. This one contains a small museum of the wall, still closed at this early hour. But the entrance is stunning!

The river Etsch (Adige) flows past the city. This is a covered walkway along the bridge:

The Etsch/Adige

We turn and walk along the wall from the outside: late flowers!

Even some chickens!

And sunflowers...

All that walking has made me hungry. This bakery makes delicious bread!

I would be happy to share some with you!

It has a sweet little campground that I have stayed at in other years too - and always those nice walks around the inside and outside of the wall!
It and some of its companions spend their days scratching around in the grass and a few choice "dustbowels" and laying eggs. There is even a rooster with them, but he didn't want to have his picture taken...
Of course nowadays it is famous (especially with Americans) for the year-around Christmas stores run by Kaethe Wohlfarth. It is something to see!
Great essay!

my grandparents are from Sicily...
This looks as a little paradise. It reminds me of Archi and Chieti in the Abruzzio Region that we visited in 2001. These were the cities of my great grandparents on my father's side.
Thank you for sharing the wonderful images.
