Hello! My name is Dena. I am a single mother of four children. I am divorced due to domestic violence. I left my husband ..who I had been with since high school .. after he literally tried to kill me with a baseball bat. Well, in order to leave him my kids and I had to leave everything we had and start over. This was difficult but we did what we had to do to survive. We have moved many times. I have worked several jobs at a time just to keep food on the table and rent paid. My kids and I have stuck together thru it all. We don't regret leaving for a minute. After all we are all together .. the five of us... and we are alive and well. Even thru all the hard work, determination, and strength we just couldn't seem to ever stay on top of things. For a time I was working a full time job a part time job and going to college. To be a single mother of four kids is hard. It makes is even harder when you recieve no child support. Then something awful happened in 2004. I was injured in a bad car accident and unable to work. I was put on disability but it wasn't enough. So we did not qualify for a traditional mortgage. The wonderful folks for habitat for humanity have reached out their arms and their hearts. They are going to help my family and I to get a home. They will be building us a new home. They will hold our mortgage for us. It will be a 20 year interest free loan. It is not a hand out .. but a hand up. It will give my children and I some of our life and our hope back. It will give us a place to be to feel safe and secure. We will no longer be homeless or have to move around. We can establish some roots in the community and make it our permanant home. We are not the only ones the genesee county habitat is helping this year. They have already built 3 homes, have another one that is almost complete, and then they are going to build my family one .. and another single mother of four is going to go next door to us! However, habitat is always looking to the future. They want to build more homes and help more families next year. There program is non profit ... and depends on the kindness and goodness of others. So Habitat is looking for volunteers. They need people to help on the job sites. They need people with construction skills, painting, roofing, and landscaping skills. Then they need volunteers to either cook for the workers at the construction site or bring meals to them. They are also always looking for fundraising help and idea's. So if anyone is able to volunteers of their time, donate to the cause, or knows of some good fundraisers ..... or has a company willing to help. By all means let me know! I know Habitat would be delighted to have any assistance they can get .... and for those of you who itemize on your taxes any donations are tax deductable and you will be given a reciept by habitat!
Thanks for reading folks...
