While going through comments on my article, I have been sewing for three days staight...A Phot Essay, it was brought to my attention that I could be making blankets for Project Linus. Thank you Kathy D. for reminding about this Charity!
I emailed the local chapter about what areas they cover, as they are in a different county from me. If theydo cover my county, then I will want more information about what all is involved with getting the blankets to the right place, what the requirements are, etc.
This also made me think about the other charities out there that need people to make handmade items for babies, the homeless, the poor, and others that are in need. While looking them up, I have discovered that they need people with all kinds of talents, sewing, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. I am sure there is more that I am missing, but that is what I can think of off the top of my head.
If you are interested in helping out and donating handmade items, there are plenty of charities in need. Many may not be local to you, but there is usually a hospital nearby who will take handmade items. Just call and ask them what the requirements for donations are.
Here are some of the websites I found while searching.
Project Linus: http://www.projectlinus.org/index.shtml
Handmade for Charity: http://home.att.net/~susanBinKC/hcharity.html (This has a large listing of charities to check out.)
Craft Site Directory: http://www.craftsitedirectory.com/charities/index.html (This also has lots of listings for charities.)

Charity Granny Blanket: http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/crochet/blankgran2.shtml (This is a pattern)
Heartmade Blessings: http://www.heartmadeblessings.org/hmbv2/afghans.aspx
There are many more worthy charities out there, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. I hope that you will decide to help out and make some blankets, socks, hat, mittens, quilts, afghans, or whatever else is needed and help out a person who is dire need of these items.
