The Freedom to Read is being outsourced to the lowest bidder.
How do you run a "public" library for profit?
In some ways, I would have to blame the county union. The county could not cut staff or hours to salvage the library for the public, because the union contract doesn't allow it. The only way the county could get the money to reopen the librarians was to privatize them and remove the staff from county payrolls. The county lost federal funding, and tried twice to pass a tax increase to help fund the library.
This is just tragic, and evidence of how fragile our public library system is.

Oh dear. :(
What's next? Public schools? I'm sure contractors employing robot teachers and a couple of security guards could run them more "efficiently".
To me public schools and public libraries are just behind police and fire protection as important government services.
