Email Notifcations
and the Daily
Gather Message?

The past few days I have been getting only sporadic email notifications from Gather. Sporadic or maybe spastic. I will get a few of one type of notification and then they quit. Another notification will not be arriving, and suddenly a couple will trickle in. when the notification runs, it is not going back and getting previously unsent notices, it is just sending a few current ones but not all of them.
An example would be New Group Members notifications. The past two days there are lots of new members in the Mountain Life group because of the Feelings of Fall Foto Challenge. Yet I have not received any notices about having any new members in the group. However, during this same time I have received some notices of new members in other groups I host. The Feelings of Fall Foto Challenge of course has meant a lot of new photos posted to the group, and I have been getting some, but not all, notices about new content needing approval.
Another Gather absentee is the daily dose of Orange message. This is the Gather Message with a recap of what some of your connections posted the day before. The last one I received was on September 26th. That edition was curiously titled Your Weekly Dose of Gather. All previous editions have been titled Your Daily Dose. Previously this daily message was known to not be delivered every day, but it usually arrived 4-5 times a week. Even if it has changed to a weekly notice, there should have been one these sent today, it has been a week since the last one.
Now then, all these notifications are user settable options. I have verified my settings. Upgrades are infamous for losing, changing, resetting these user settings. So I checked them out right after last week's upgrade, and all of them are still set the way they were before the 28sep07 upgrade. Yet I am not getting the messages and notices. I have received some emails and comments from other members that they are not getting their notifications or daily message either.

Well, you haven't missed a whole lot. A week and a half ago there was someone that tried to start their own little porn site on the back alley of Gather Town. It was a rather pathetic attempt. They posted a rash of photos they had copied from some other porn sites. I can see better, and live, walking around the casinos at Stateline any Saturday night...
... anyways ... back to your comment, it is strange how haphazard the settings work.
In the event that you are using a Yahoo email address for your receipt of mail from Gather, there is currently a problem with Yahoo that will lead to the problems you have identified here. Therefore, it is recommended that you use another email provider.
If you don't have Yahoo, then it must be those troublesome Gather Glitch Gremlins™!
Mr. Bill > question about the Mt. grp photo contest: your specs say must allow ratings and i want to know if winners are going to be based on ratings?....if so, then i will have to remove myself from the group as i have been bashed enough during contests with db trolls......thanks,gayle
hmmm...let's see... nope! don't use Yahoo Mail for Gather related email.
Even if I or someone else experiencing this phenomenon did use Yahoo Mail, this would not explain the sometimes notices/sometimes not, only receiving some notices of a particular type on a given day, or getting the new member notices for one group but not another group.
And let's get the terminology in the correct order - there is currently a problem with Yahoo that will lead to the problems you have identified - should read "there is currently a problem on Gather that will lead to the problems of email notifications not being delivered to Yahoo Mail accounts.
My upgrade routine:
When I first login after an upgrade I go to "my account" and reset my personal preferences. Next I start going through the groups I host and reset the group/member settings. With 5 moderated groups it is a lot of work to get everything set back to status quo.
I know you have mentioned that issue a couple
or more times since the middle of Aug. Did the
upgrade last Friday resolve that for her?

Feelings of Fall - Foto Challenge is open to all members of the Gather Commnunity, including Gather Essentials Correspondents, Writing Editors, Gather Guides, and Gather employees who are amateur* photographers.
* You must be a member of the Mountain Life group.
* All photos/images entered in the Mountain Life - Feelings of Fall - Foto Challenge must be the original creative work of the person entering the photo/image.
* Photos must be posted to the Mountain Life group.
* Photos must have this tag on the image - feelingsoffall
* All entries must allow ratings.
* All entries must allow comments by all members of Gather.
Only entries posted per the above criteria between 00:01 A.M. EST Tuesday 02oct07 through 11:59 P.M. EST Sunday 28oct07 are eligible for the Mountain Life - Feelings of Fall - Foto Challenge.

This is an incorrect assumption. There are several factors that can lead to mail not passing through the service provider (Yahoo) due to their internal routing protocol. This also can affect the frequency of mail delivery. Often this occurs when changes to routing variables are made on the host system that impact domain key signatures and authentication. This can have nothing to do with Gather, except that Gather is the catalyst for these actions during a system update (leading to changes in delivery frequency commencing at that point in time). Ultimately Gather may bear some culpability in this situation, but there are also realistic scenarios where they would bear none as well.
I agree that the Orange "Weekly Dose of Gather" thing hasn't come in maybe 2x this week. I was getting it every day for awhile. I checked my settings and re-set it for once a week.
I would love it if I just got the messages from the actual lists I am on. Not the people from the groups BUT the actual group. You could read the article and answer if you wish. You could say if you want to answer it or not. That would be much easier on my email box!
