Last Saturday it was my turn to host our bi-monthly song festival.
This is an institution among my friends and friends of friends
The idea is to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon/evening together playing musical excerpts from great movies. We're all somehow involved in the creative arts world.
My turn comes around about every 18 months or so and I always feature songs from my great collection of Bollywood movie DVD's. Some of my Indian friends from Durban came up and so we were a motley but happy bunch.
It was a group that had a strong movie making (Indian and Hollywood), script writing and radio jock elements. We thus had the add-on plus of Indian music expertise available... some who could demonstrate a few dance movements and those that could tell us about filming dance scenes in the field.
.
The radio announcer was a lovely modern Muslim girl who was able to explain some of the terms and concepts of love referred to in the stunning war movie "Dil Se".
I was the host and was thus the one that chose the songs that we would listen to and discuss. As we listened, we drank beer, wine, fruit juices, tea and coffee. We had lots of food including samoosas, chips, dried sausages and lots of our delicious South African dried fruit. The stage was thus set for total immersion in the music and the dancing. A journey to another world. Spectacles that can only be seen in Indian movies.
This was my selection. They are some of my all time favourites and were received with ecstatic delight by all. I'll try and tell you why.
1. Song and Dance from the movie "China Gate"
This story takes place in the stark locale of Hampi, Karnataka and it's about old soldiers being called back into action after assuming that their war days were finally over. Urmila Matondkar puts in a stunning guest appearance.
In her dance "Chamma Chamma" she dances to some incredible music. Her dance is exciting to behold and shows how well she was trained in a difficult but exciting style of dancing.
But it's her expressions that hold your attention. Her smile is irresistibly cheeky and her pantomiming is a delight.
2.Song and Dance from the movie "Nayak"
This story is mind boggling for its most incredible background effects but ones that are not outrageously impossible. They are all based on Indian legends and fables.
In the number "Tu Achch Lagta Hai" Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerjee dance in front of a gigantic heap of pumpkins that grows larger and larger until it has, like a haveli (or large mansion) balconies in among the pumpkins.
The couple dance with a freedom that is a delight to see and the music is a joy.
Later, the two do a dance while somehow keeping a broomstick lodged between them without the use of their hands.
PS. Anil Kapoor is now the India-South Africa Cultural Ambassador.
3. Two Song and Dances from the movie "Dil Se"
This story has a sad political theme based on tension between the Indian and Pakistani communities. The story is about atrocities and revenge.
The main roles are played by the incredible Shah Ruhk Khan and Manisha Koirala who is so suited to her role that she must have been born to play it.
In the movie Dil Se represents the seven shades of love described in ancient Arabic literature as hub, uns, ishq, aqidat, ibaddat, junoon and maut.
Of these the shade "ishq" is the one most referred to in poetry..."the flame of her body is felt...his breath starts igniting...love".
The first song and dance is an all-time classic. Imagine a train, with the roof crowded to the brim with passengers, travelling between high mountains and deep valleys over the tallest bridges that you'll ever see and sometimes going through tunnels with the whistle blowing eerily.
During the number "Chaiya Chaiya" SRK and a superb dancer give a display of dancing that will never be equalled anywhere in the world. The music too grabs your soul and says "live this moment as if it's your last".
Andrew Lloyd Webber used this music in his ill-fated "Bombay Dreams" and it was all that saved his musical from being his most gigantic flop.
I saw SRK live on stage in Durban with Amitabh Bachchan acting totally impromptu on the state for 3 ½ hours. They had the 60 000 audience totally enthralled. In my humble opinion, SRK is the greatest living actor alive anywhere in the world.
The second song and dance number is down between bombings, shootings, rushing troops and scenes of disaster. It's the title song "Dil Se" and the music is hauntingly beautiful. As they dance one realises how an impossible love begins to flourish and how she, try as she might, cannot withstand SRK's irresistible appeal.
4. Two Song and Dances from the movie "Sur The Musical"
For me this is the musical of all musicals. It has everything especially the most credible circumstances.
It's about a beautiful music school high up i in the mountains near Goa. Lucky is the world famous teacher under whom everyone wants to study. Gauri is the poor waitress who can sing but thinks of music sheets as "ants crawling on paper".
Her sister finds the money and Gauri is enrolled at the school where she is, at first, a total failure. Then one morning she wakes up with the realisation that she has just composed a song. And what a song it is.
She dances through the school and out into the meadows singing what must be the happiest song ever written. It's called "Dil Mein Jaagi Dhadkar Aise".
Gauri faces the deepest dejection as her Master becomes insanely jealous of her talents. Eventually he finds her in a monastery and persuades her to appear on the stage. The film ends with a magnificent solo performance of virtuoso singing, wild gypsy music and heart stopping dancing.
This second number is called "Kabhie Sham Dhale" and the dubbed voice is that of Mahalaxmi, one of India's great songstresses.
On must understand that Indian song and dance numbers last for at least 10 to 15 minutes. So with all the watching, discussion, eating and drinking, the event lasted until late that evening...but there wasn't anyone in the sitting room who really wanted it all to end.

I am so happy that I don't know what to say and on what to comment..
Fred I always admire your taste and now you have fulfilled one of my wish ..and trust me you have a very very good taste and these are the milestones of Bollywood.

But you exceeded my expectations. I'm touched by your support of my scoice and, wow, there you have all the numbers lined up. That's so brilliant.
Do you know what. This is my first collaboration on Gather and we two are creating an article that I'm going print out and frame. It goes on my wall with all the comments and all your links.
With much love dear Bhawana.
I for one love them as they are....! And now that we have Hritik Roshan on the scene, the dances have aquired a new dimension! Boy! can he dance!
Btw, there are two different people by the names of Amir Khan and Anil Kapoor.
Sounds like so much fun Fred.
Which movies do you remember specially?
I know Amir Khan well. I saw him in Lagaan and Raja Hindustani.
I've spoken to Anil Kapoor about making Indian movies in SA. He's very positive about this.
Thanks for your enthusiastic comments. I enjoyed them.
But listen. My choice for favourite woman actress is Kajol. I just can't help it. She's got that very special magic.
I am a great great fan of Rekha...She is a complete beauty..
and Madhuri Dixit..
That's my all time most favourite movie. I've 47 Bollywood DVD's and Ideo's and DDLJ is in my pride of place.
That scene with SRK laying the piano is the greatest fun scenr that I've ever enjoyed
I don't know Masoom...I'll have to get it.
Wow Reena. I was watching Sholay last night. Are you talking about the original or the very new one? I loved it.
Ah Kajol. She's pure magic. Sometimes she's the one I write about in my stories.
watch out Fred..

Do you know an older actress known as Sridevi, I think? She was a kind of rival for Rekha.
I've got to go and do some work. Please don't stop. I'll come back as soon as i can. I don't want to miss ANYTHING.
Go go go go.
SRK is my one true love and this ritual is such an exciting one... I love that you love Hindi cinema... and Dil Se was an amazing movie...
Yes Apryl. It was a wonderful time together. Everyone had this common passion.
I'm at many international festivals. You never know where a good movie will come from. Look how China is making these incredible films.
Thanks for your visit.
Thanks for that video cut. Wonderful.
Tom these movies go to a depth of emotion that I don't often see in other movies. Some scenes tug fiercely at your heart and others make you aware of dance and scenic beauties that you forgot existed.
I'm particularly interested because a Bollywood company is considering one of my books for a possible movie.
Thanks for the interest. I'll tell you all immediately. If I can calm down from the excitement.
I love that song of Urmilla ..she is my fav actorress ...and guess what I have danced on this number N number of times ...you will get better of Urmilla in in Many ram gopal verma's movies ...
Dil se is all time favourite movie and songs touch your heart ...If you know love , if you live love , if you breath love ...you can't resist magic of Dil se music ....this is one album that I use to listen back to back whole day and night during my college days ....I love santarangi re and eh ajnabi ...its music haunts you ..words are pure like love ...
SRK , real king of Indian cinema ..man known for perfection ...He started his life as a theatre artist ..did few Tv serials and later became superstar of indian cinema .... He is ultimate lover boy as he potrayed in DDLJ, K3G, DIl SE, DTPH etc etc ...In his real life also he is known as an Ideal husband and great dad ... check out his latest CHAK DE ...absolute delight ..
ah! Fred ...loved this article about Indain cinema ...and I salute your knowledge about music and you are a man of great taste ..
ah ! another romantic number ..
I used to think that she is a fairy ..and once I wrote a letter to her ...I wrote "I love sridevi " 10,000 times in that ... but then I was just 7 years old ..:-)
Yes Magi, these get togethers are milestones of pure delight in my life. Many Bollywood movies are being shot in Australia and Canade...and of course South Africa.
Maybe the difference is that we are the proud home to over one million Indians here in SA and they've been here for over 150 years.
Did you dance the China Gate number??? Well then my admiration for you goes up 10 notches.
Yes Dil Se gets to me too. It goes deep down into my core. I think that I become part of the story because I feel so much.
I've read all about SRK. I know that in the turmoil of movie making life he has remained a wonderful husband and a great father. Not one ounce of scandal. Never. One has to bear in mind that he is a Muslim but his wife is a Hindu.
!0 000 times. What a wonderful show of love. I'm soory to say that I've just read abouther bur I've never been able to find a movie of hers to look at. I must try harder.
Amar, don't forget about K in Pardes. This film has some quite amazing song tracks. I have the music on a CD and listen to it inmy car. It does wonders for my soul. Especially the song that a man in a tropical suit and a wide brimmed hat sings on a barge drifting down the Ganges.
Thank you for your praise and for your acceptance of my taste and thoughts. I really appreciate that very much.
I love dancing and if there is music ...I can't help myself ..
for the record madhuri is one of the best dancers we have in India..
I admire SRK for being such a nice person in his real life ...and he and gauri make such great couple
you should watch ..sadma, chandni, lamhe (my fav) , khuda gawah, chal baaz , zudai ...
yes Fred , pardes is another one that has got superb music and wondeful emotions ...I love yeh dil ....that song is I love my India ..
you should watch taal , hum dil de chuke sanam , devdas ... all have beautiful love stories and amazing songs , dances and locales .....
Is that a list of SRK movies? Please tell me. I don't have them and so I must try and get them. Especially Lamhe.
I love that song Yeh Dil. Ters come into my eyeswhen it comes up. ..and I'm not a born Indian. Isn't that funny. It's all about the emotion in the song.
I've got those last three movies that you mention but I never play Devdas anymore. I get so mad at SRK for his foolishly frustrating role...but the songs and dances are out of this world.
have you by any chance watched "Razia sultan" ..its an old movie ..you will like it
music , dance and love ..they are beyond region and religions ... thats y you connect to them so well ..
That list is a treasure and I'll try to find Lamhe for sure. Also Razia Sultan. Thanks for them.
Yes...music, love and dance are beyond religion. That is so so true. Thank you for this dear Amar.
My comments on your work only reflect what I see in your words and...wow...your animations.
But good Bollwood movies are not just viewing...they're an experience. It's the scenes, the traditions, the ancient buildings, the Ganges, the dancing etc.
It's also about the feminity of the women and the devotion of the men...who sometimes have to go through great hardships to be by her side.
Now Indian music and the poetry in the songs, is something so special that I sometimes thank God for giving me the privilege of having been associated with it all since childhood.
I have an unusual question. I was talking with some friends about city names in songs. I remember hearing the name Pretoria in a song, but for the life of me can't remember it. I'm quite sure it was a popular song. Do you know what the song title is?
At one stage the Brits were marching on the Capital and the song they sang was "We are marching to Pretoria".
I'm sure that you'll remember the melody if you rack your brains.
Please check my latest video
"My Special Gather Spray 'g'"
If anyone has more favourite You-tube songs and dances PLEASE post here.
Hey Monika...I want some of that spray...what a crazy wonderful video!!!
I think that it was a very special occasion and I will always remember this party.
I'm going to keep this thread open so that you can add comments to it and perhaps more song and dance tracks. . Already you've added bountifully to my pleasure. These days when I need a break, I just go to Chaiyya Chaiyya or whatever.
Thank you thank you dear friends.
Just thought I'd share this with you.
We're rather proud of our local untrained ex-farmer commandos who were outnumbered 8 to one in that war against the Brits only a hundred years ago.
At present, at the top of our song hit parade, is "Del la Rey" about a famous intrepid commando general who time after time came to the rescue of beleaguered fellow commandos.
The war was about our fabulous gold, diamond and other metal resources...what else?
All wars are about power and gold = power.
Yes I love these all-too-rare evenings. Thank you saying such ce things.
Yes we sure had a lot of fun. Like never before. Thank you for coming.
Oh I love "First looks". Even the title grabbed my attention. Wow.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWG1VY3S7Eo
my fav sridevi number from lamhe ...
Isn't she a dancing goddess. You know, this is a scene that I see in my dreams and when I close my eyes in a coffee shop before I begin to write.
The words too are beautiful. I will get Lamhe somehow.
Amar, if you have any more of these please post them here. I want this thread to be a personal treasure for me and for all those that love Indian song and dance.
Remember that it goes with me wherever my laptop goes. For those special moments when I need inspiration.
Thank you dear.
Wow! Fred. This an amazing description of that Song Festival. I almost felt as if I am there. I know all those songs by heart and when I was reading all those description I was visualizing them in my mind. Ah... I missed being there. This article also reminded me of my homeland India. I miss it a lot. Thanks to internet we still get to hear and see all these songs.
I will appreciate it if you will add this article to my group "Talk about India and Friends."
