My Emmy

Well, close enough.  My town got hit by a tornado that went down and around my house and straight through Main Street.  We are a little town just west of Oklahoma City.  We got an Emmy for the video shot of our El Reno tornado.  Now, there isn't much good to  a tornado devasting your town.  It took out the only store I liked in El Reno.  It totaled my excercise place and my bread store.  Other building got hit but it was more of urban renewal.  Anyway, if nothing good can come of  a tornado, when you live in a small town most people never heard of, it's pretty exciting to hear your town announced.  We won an Emmy.  Wow. 

I came from the Bronx, you know, New York City, the Yankees, etc.   The Bronx even has the Wonder Bread Factory, but now, my claim to fame is a tornado that blew away a good part of my town.  Big City girl turns to small town wanna be.  

I want a town famous for anything.  Now I got it.  A tornado Emmy.  We are mighty proud in this here parts.

We had a tornado in Guelph a few years ago...ripped the top off of my school a few years AFTER I graduated!!! Where was that damned tornado when I NEEDED it?

that happen in oklahoma,, tornadao alley along as in nebraska,, we had one back in 1972 wipe out half of the main major street and many store hotel and eben the hospital,,,

I worry more about hurricanes but we have tornados too. When my daughter was small she called them tomatoes. :)

(applause) congratulations....I'm glad you and your loved ones lived through it, and it's always nice to be known for something...but hopefully next time it will be for someone in your town winning the big jackpot in Power Ball!

Coming from a land that knows neither tornados not hurricanes, I'm totally amazed by your article Carol. And I love your laconic style. It brought a smile to my face even though I felt for you all.
Beats me why people who live in tornado corridors don't build their homes out of brick and mortar. All our homes here are very strongly built. If it's affordable here why not in the US?

I grew up in the Midwest and have a healthy fear of tornadoes. Now that I live on the Olympic Peninsula, I worry about earthquakes instead, but not too often.... I felt the Nisqually quake a few years ago.

this was this year. The F5 that came through a few years ago had the highest winds every recorded on Earth and was hardly reported.

wow....see hurricanes don't scare me so much because I have lived in Florida all my life...but a tornado scares the mess out of me.

So glad you can see the wicked humor in your well-earned EMMY. Nevertheless, much congratulations! I have a friend in Moore who lost his home to the 1989 or was it '99, biggie. He completely rebuilt from scratch, but it was quite devastating. We had our first tornado here in the Princeton, NJ area two years ago. It made a mile-wide swath down Route 1 and wiped out mini-malls and car dealerships. It was not more than a half-mile from my house, and the ground rumbled and shook, and it DID sound like a train. How frightening to live where it is such a reality on a daily basis for so many months at a time!
