Fred Thompson Raises over 8 million from 70,000 donors

The Thompson Campaign announced today that they have raised over 8 million dollars from over 70,000 donors since they started setting up camp. This is a huge donor base since McCain had previously set records with a donation base of around 50,000 donors.  Good news for FRED and AMERICA.

What does setting up camp mean? the day he formed his committee (in which case $8 mil is chickenfeed) or the day he announce (in which case he is doing well).

I think the issue is how much did each donor give and how many of them have maxed out their contribution limits.

The 8 million is for Fred for President. There is an additional 3.5 Million raised under Friends of Fred. That puts his total at 11.5 Million dollars over the whole quarter under the two groups.

But, somewhat paltry compared to Romney and Giuliani thus far. Thompson's seeming lack of "get up and go", combined with his lukewarm at best support among religious conservatives, indicates he needs to make up substantial ground. His delays (plural) in entering the race will almost certainly prove to be fatal.

Greg you cant raise large sums quicly it has taken over a year for the others to come up with their figures. Romney is spending his own money on his campaign. I think that the delay will help him. Romney wasted tons of money this summer when no one was paying attention. His numbers are falling quickly in the early states and cant poll in double digits nationwide. It will end up being Fred vs Rudy and both will have the money to go the distance.

I'll be very surprised it Fred gets the nod. But, hey, stranger things have happened. I'm not so sure that his lack of money will be the reason. I think his lack of values will be the problem. The Republicans are still very caught up in the values of others.

I agree with you on values. But, Romney and Rudy both dont have those traitional values.
I'm very glad he's doing so well, especially since I do receive the weekly updates from his site and this info had not yet come to me.
Joe T, I disagree with you about Fred getting the nod. Rudy may have been my original choice, but he's lost his luster with me (and many conservatives) with some of his recent antics and statements. I believe the presidential candiate for the republicans WILL be Fred Thompson.

I don't think that Fred Thompson will get the nod because he is not conservative enough. At least, he's not conservative enough in the social arena. I think he'll say all of the right things but never really please the so called social conservatives which make up somewhere between 35% and 40% of the Republican base. The figures just don't add up.

Publius, Clinton and Carter were both polling at somewhere around 6% nationally at this stage in their respective election cycles so it is absurd to count Romney out on that basis.

I think Thompson waited too long and has been putting forth a lackluster effort thus far. Although the number of debates has grown out of hand, I think he has made serious errors in ducking them so far. I don't think he is a serious contender at this point based on his own choices.

Besides, one cycle of moderate fundraising success means nothing. He needs to be able to maintain and increase his collections and once again, it depends on how many donors have maxed out their contributions as well as an ability to broaden his appeal.

I suspect he and McCain will walk the road home together following the convention and neither of them will be at all happy.

Greg, I think with Dobson on the warpath against Thompson, to say he has lukewarm success among religious conservatives is a gross overstatement. I think Giuliani might be able to overcome that negative, I don't see that Thompson has the drive or the broader base of support.

70,000 donor is a larger base than any of the other cantidates. And if dobson is on the warpath on any cantidare it is Giulani who he now says if he wins the nomination they will run a third party cantidate. Lukewarm seems like a good description of how he feels toward Thompson.

Thompson is just reving up and is second in the polls. He hasnt even taken on the Empty Suit Rudy yet.

Dobson also stated he would not support Thompson. He isn't threatening a third party candidate because it doesn't seem liklely that Yhompson will be the candidate.

But again, if the 70,000 or some significant number of them have maxed out their contributions, they will drop off the list because they can't give more. It is a per campaign limit not a per quarter one.

With all due respect Nanci what I was saying about 70,000 donors is that they are not maxed out and they are more than anyone else has.

That said if all 70,000 maxed out he would have 161 million dollars.

I don't know who dontates money to those people. Most of them have more money than the avg American will ever have, and they want us to finance their career moves?
