I'll be choosing winners at random for the following titles, although it'd be nice if people would pass along the benefit by writing a review of their own. Winners are under no obligation to write a positive review, just share your thoughts with the community.
Some of these books are older classics and others are newer books. Many were made into movies or Broadway shows - or will be. Below is a brief synopsis of each book.
In a comment, please let me know if you'd be interested in any. Winners wil get a paperback copy, sent free. to them. If you comment, please understand I have limited copies, generally one of each title. Be SURE to mention which book you want, thanks
Please, please do NOT send Gather mail about this to my mailbox as I AlREADY get requests for votes for contests and I don't have time to wade through mail AND comments, sorry. Winners will be notified in 10 days. ALL BOOKS ARE PAPERBACK AND IN NICE CONDIITION, although the novel Bitter Sweets does have some markings in it.
THE TITLES AND BRIEF REVIEWS:
1. The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio (How my Mother Raised 10 kids on 25 Words or Less): This is a memoir, nonfiction, written by the daughter of Evelyn Ryan and it is truly inspirational. I am old enough to remember when magazines actually had the type of contests that Mrs. Ryan entered, where contestants had to fill in the last line of a jingle. If you like true accounts of people overcoming adversity or you enjoy games involving wordplay, this one might be for you. It has a Foreword by Suze Orman and got raves from such publications as The New Yorker, NY Times, Washington Post, People Magazine and even author Patricia Cornwell.
Evelyn Ryan was married to an alcoholic husband and ahd to fight to turn every financial challenge into an opportunity during a time when women weren't encouraged to work or earn much money. This was later turned into a major motion picture which was good but the book is even better, in my opinion.
2 . Wicked - The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Macguire -This book was the basis for the Broadway play with the same title and is a fantasy tale about the "behind the scenes" story of the Wicked Witch. Where did she come from? What were the circumstances of her birth and life? One focus is on how she became so wicked and a general look at good and evil. I found this a very fun book to read and it made me think about ethics, good, evil and was also a very good escapist read. Lke fantasy? This might be for you!
3. A Simple Plan by Scott Smith - I consider this a book that deserves to be a classic, one that also became a movie but which lost some of the complexity of the ethical dilemnas at the heart of this novel. The situation is seemingly simple. Three men find a bag full of over 4 million dollars after coming upon a crashed plane. One wants to turn the money in, reasoning there is no safe way to keep it. The others come up with a scheme to try and keep the money, especially since it may be "drug money" and under the radar screen. What seems like a fairly straightforward tale takes unexpected twists and turns. A favorite of mine!
4. Town House - by Tish Cohen -(soon to be a major motion picture). This novel is for those who like something a bit different and would be one that those prone to anxiety or social phobial could relate to. It is the tale of an agoraphobic (someone afraid to leave his home) and the challenges he faces as his home is about to be sold. I was riveted by thie writing style of the author, soneone who was able to keep me reading a book which I didn't think I'd like. Humorous, very realistic and suprising developments fill this book.
5. Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies -by Richard Heinberg -copyright 2003 - 3rd edition - A look a the imminent decline of oil and how that affects everything from travel to unexpected aspects of everyday life. Recommendations are included for resource conservation and a more sustainable society.
6. Bitter Sweets by Roopa Farooki - a novel - Advance copy - PLEASE NOTE: if you ask for this one, I have underlined some parts but not much. This is brand new fiction and a first novel about a woman from Calcutta whose father convinces her to deceive a man into marrying her and how this act reverberates through the marriage and life of the couple's daughter. The author has been compared to Zadie Smith, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Arundhari Roy.
There you have it - six books, each of them going to some member of Gather. If you don't win, perhaps you'll consider picking up a copy of one of these books anyway. I hope my brief reviews have given you a taste of each book, a hint of what is insie.

Jane, what a great idea. I should do something like this!
More books! I'm open to recommendations for good books...to replace those I'm sending to new homes...
:)
I also love the fact that the title character's name, Elphaba, was taken from the phonetic sounds of L. Frank Baum's initials. What a lovely way to pay homage to the creator of the original Wizard of Oz.
Have you read the sequel, Son of a Witch, yet?
I would love a shot at this one...I have met so many wonderful people here on gather from India. It's a culture I must learn more about...Any nation that produces the caliber of people I've met here makes me want to know more.
And, truly, thanks for sharing!

Glad to stop by to read your articles anytime. :-)
A Simple Plan ~ or~
Town house
I read the Prizewinner That was pretty good - have no interest in the others - just not my genre'.
This is very neat - thanks!!!!!!!
All 6 are fantastic choices, but I have to say I just can't pick. I'm a Bibliophile!
The Prize Winner, A Simple Plan, Town House, Bitter Sweets I will read. (I'm halfway through The Ruins now.)
Post the winners at The Book Nook, but I'll bow out of the competion.
A Simple Plan....I loved the movie and have always wanted to read the book.
and
Wicked...i've been on a wizard of oz kick lately.
I assume you're throwing your hat in the ring for the books?
:)
A Simple Plan deviates wildly from the movie and is a book I've read with a friend, aloud, chapter by chapter, talking about the ethics, values, dilemnas, etc. It is a good read, although there were some parts I hoped weren't believable (but probably were) when it came to human character and values.
that makes the book, Simple Plan, more intriguing.
as a matter of fact you've influenced me to maybe hold contests for the books i review.
I sell rare books, not providing a link (might be considered spamming) but for the lower cost but still excellent books, I see no point in selling them for a pittance. Would rather have someone enjoy them free. Pay it forward, I guess.
I like short reviews as detailed ones sometimes spoil the story.
EVERYONE who commented on this thread won one of their preferred books.I'll contact you individually to let you know WHICH one.
The rules (please follow for your safety and mine):
1.. You MUST have your book shipped to someplace OTHER than your home -a friend's home, workplace, doesn't matter. This is just common sense and security, folks
2. Books will be sent MEDIA maiil and with delivery confirmation (no signature required)
3. Expect delivery time of approximately 10-21 days, depending on where you live. Normal delivery time for media mail is 3-10 days but, trust me, I've shipped books and that varies widely, especially as we head into the holidays.
4. I will pack and ship promptly but I am NOT responsible for the mail room guy or woman who slips up, tosses your box away, etc. Delivery CONFIRMATION, with a tracking number you can check, will ensure that your book got to the right address. After that, my role ends.
If any of this sounds too strict, sorry. I'm just big on security and safety at both ends of the delivery spectrum.
