How To Make Halloween Playdough
When Halloween rolls around, I get super excited. It's my favorite Holiday and I enjoy making all kinds of crafts and treats for Halloween. In recent years, I started making my own holiday playdough. It's quick, easy and fun to do. When you buy playdough, it's usually pretty affordable but making your own can give you a sense of satisfaction (it did for me), plus you get to pick your own colors and your kids can even help you make it.
How To Make Halloween Playdough #1: Ingredients
You will need
2 cups boiling water
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1 tablespoon cream of tarter (optional but I recommend it, it helps make the playdough stretch a little better)
Food coloring
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1 tablespoon cream of tarter (optional but I recommend it, it helps make the playdough stretch a little better)
Food coloring
How To Make Halloween Playdough #2: Combine your ingredients.
First you need to boil your water. When it's got a nice rolling boil going on, add your flour, salt, oil and cream of tarter immediately. Stir with a hard plastic or wooden spoon. Turn off the burner and move the pot to the counter. After it cools, you want to roll it by hand to get it all smooth.
How To Make Halloween Playdough #3: Dying your playdough
What makes this playdough, Halloween playdough is the dye. You need to dye it spooky colors with food coloring. When I make my Halloween playdough I like to do any of the following colors: green, purple, orange and a dark blackish green (this color makes great monsters). To make the color orange, you need to mix red and yellow food coloring. If you want purple, mix red and blue. For black, mix all the colors in your food coloring together and this will give you black or gray. For the monster color, dark blackish green, mix all the colors together but add more green then any other color.
How To Make Halloween Playdough #4: Playing with your playdough
Set up a clean area for your child to play with their playdough. Since this is HALLOWEEN playdough, suggest to your child that they make Halloween creations, such as pumpkins, a witch or even a creepy monster. You can buy Halloween cookie cutters that work perfect as playdough toys.
How To Make Halloween Playdough #5: Storing your playdough
Storing your playdough immediately after use is a very important thing. If you don't, it will dry out right away. You can store your playdough in an airtight container or in a Ziploc bag. I recommend storing your different colored playdough separately and not together. Homemade playdough will only last a few days but it's very easy to cook yourself up a new batch.
The finished result
You could make a pumpkin
Or even a Halloween Witch

Love the pumpkin and witch, Shannon! :)
Can't wait to read the rest of your 31 days of Halloween articles!! What a cool idea! I was just thinking the other night about doing a 12 days of Christmas one.
Matt, you could probably eat it but I think it would taste really disgusting. Surprisingly, none of my kids have tried to eat. :)
Thanks to everyone! It was fun doing it.
Stay tuned for 30 more days of Halloween.
