Dan had a cookbook give a way contest. To win we were to write an embarassing cooking story. This was my entry: | |
When I first got married, I was a decent cook. I had cooked for my four brothers while mom worked with my dad at his printshop. I could not cook biscuits though. My mom tried to teach me; my mother-in-law tried. I just couldn't get the hang of it, and Kenny loved the darn things. The afternoon I finally learned is Kenny's favorite newlywed story. From his perspective: I came in, hearing sobs from the kitchen. I walk in there, concerned, and I have to tell you, it looked like a snowstorm in the spring. There was white dust everywhere. Dena was sitting at the table crying over the prettiest batch of fluffy biscuits that I have ever laid my eyes on. She had flour in her hair, on her eyelashes, on her face, and on everything else. When I asked her what was wrong, she said through sniffs, "I am just so happy." She then showed me the thirty gallon trash can. It was full of botched bread. She had spent the day practicing recipes and techniques until she finally had mastered the inviting looking biscuits at the dinner table. When I asked her why she had let it bother her, she said, "I love you so much, and you love biscuits. I just wanted them perfect for you." This is a true story. Kenny took me in his arms and kissed my tears away. It was worth the trouble. Please come and read my 2nd round entry for the FCR contest and rate at the following link: http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977126565 |

My husband, being from MD didn't know what a good biscuit tasted like. He was used to dinner rolls or something that came out of a can from a refrigerated case. I made him biscuits and gravy. All 5 of my children love biscuits, but not one of them can make them. I have a 16 year old granddaughter, who loves to cook. She made some biscuits from a Paula Dean recipe that included yeast and sugar. They were good, but tasted more like a dinner roll. The men folk didn't appreciate them. At least she tried and she got the technique down. Now she just needs to be there the next time I make biscuits.
