War forces everything to extremes until...

The first thing a war does is crush all the moderates.

The middle class is gone from Iraq. They are all refugees. The adults of them don't plan on returning in their lifetime and are only finding hope in the thought that someday it will be a place their children can return to.

As long as we occupy them then the extremist (who are all that are left) will have a common enemy and single focus, kill Americans, and Iraq will not be able to return to a normal place regular people can live in.

It's a hard call and I don't believe any of us can make it. The Iraquis should make it. As Bret said, pulling out could quite possibly result in mass homicide in Iraq. This is not pretty but we DO have SOME responsibility to the Iraqi citizenry.

Our stupid misguided colonialism is making things worse. So wouldn't stopping that be part of the solution to the problem? Staying is being occupiers of a country that isn't ours. That breeds terrorists. Why are we getting the opposite of what we want?
