Ode to Arethusa
Among the tares of the soft earth
Your rare pink head flares, watching,
Aware. Soft rustlings,... beware!
Quick as a hare, you careen under
The ground; back to the areca girls
Too young to blare such wares.
Their eyes smeared with bare stares;
Scared; spared nothing of life.
Arethusa protect us!
In the next truck, is it Alpheus?
Does he dare come here? Run again.
Back to the river, spare no time.
Arethusa teared up; arrived careworn
In the sleepy square. She gushes
Along with him...a carefree spray.

In Greek myth, Arethusa was a nymph who swam naked in the river of Alpheus (the Alfios). He desired her and tried to capture her but she was protected by Artemis. Arethusa swam under the land of Greece (east to west). arriving on the island of Ortygia off the Sicilian coast. Alpheus caught up with her; their waters mixing to form the fountain in Ortygia.
I just got back to Gather late today after dealing with the cat (some thing you commented on ) and wanted to thank you for taking the time to comfort me. If anyone else reads this feel free to send a Gather mail instead as this is the ONE time I do not want or need points but the kindness is appreciated. I do not think we get points for Gather mails and my purpose in posting here is simply to say a big THANK YOU
