Why is it that the people that flag and rate low on articles, pictures, and videos and never leave a comment as to why? If you are so steadfast in your believes as to what you have done, then how come you do not have the guts or the decency to state why? If you are going to give a rating that you feel the person really deserves, then also write a comment as to why. Don’t just give a one and run away thinking, “That’ll teach ‘em.” No, in fact it doesn’t teach them, there is no lesson to be learned other than people can be mean for no reason. If you have a reason, you should be man or woman enough to state it. And if you are flagging something why not leave a comment as to why? Flagging an article for hate speech that is about hate crimes makes no sense to me. However, if you felt that by drawing attention to this hate crime, that this was in fact perpetuating more hate, then write that. Yet, if that’s what you think, then you should never watch the news or read the paper, because that’s all you would find.
I implore everyone, before you flag something as inappropriate, ask yourself; Am I willing to sign my name to this? Am I willing to let everyone on gather know my beliefs? Because if you aren’t then don’t do it! It’s that simple. I really do wish that instead of saying it was flagged by community that it indicated who flagged it or that they had to give a real reason, not just pick from a list. Too many people stay in the shadows. Why? If you believe something believe it, don’t do it half-@$%ed. If you aren’t willing to put your name to it, then you probably shouldn’t do it.
Of course this is just my opinion and I will probably be flagged for this now. LOL Just another article for the overworked employees at Gather to check!

Now, the reason that I flagged this person's article was because he/she was directly copying, 100%, word for word, entire chapters of a well known authors book and publishing it on Gather. This person started with Chapter 1 and was publishing a few Chapters a day!! That's just plain old nuts and wrong!!!
In this world of too much bs and pc, I salute anyone speaking their mind with honesty and conviction!

Perhaps I should have indicated vindictive or asinine flaggers.
As for DB 1s they are in a league of their own. I personally don't believe that anyone on Gather deserves a 1 rating.
The rating system should probably just be removed all together. The flagging system should require a back up of evidence stating just why it should be flagged that way, and possibly, require several different & unique IP people flagging the article for the same reason before it's yanked off to be examined.
There's really little point in hiding an article or photo from view at first. I've been flagged a few times- only 1 thing was removed due to Gather finding it to be outside of the TOS (which I hadn't known at the time). The other stuff all got released after time.
What I find funny, is that Gather will investigate claims of SPAM flagged items hours, days, and weeks ahead of things flagged with stuff that's far more offensive like hate speech, sexually explicit material, etc. Sure, spam might be easier to make the decision on, but I'd guess that for all the flags going around, about 50-75% of it is unfairly flagged, and could be reviewed and released immediatly.
In the mean time, we have videos of girls giving blow jobs that take a week to disappear because no one investigates it.
Heather, I completely agree with you on all points. I think you made some excellent suggestions. I can completely see the retaliation fact as Melanie pointed out too, which is unfair, especially when an item if flagged for a just reason. Something needs to be done, because it is really getting out of hand.

Don't let the turkeys get you down...
From the activity I've seen recently, it almost seems like there is a serial flagger running amuck on Gather...
All of a sudden, I have visions of CSI Gather or Law & Order: Flagger & DB1 running around in my head...
I don't understand why... ;-P

I understand the complains of unnecessary flagging... I've only had one article flagged so far (*knocks on wood*). It was a video that I took and I added some music from an MP3.. it was flagged for copywrite... now had it been the entire song, I'd understand that, but it was a 41 second clip. Give me a break! Thank you Gather for unflagging it (though it took about 2 weeks).
Anyway (*rant off*), that being said, the flagging system does need to be there. It would take too much time for Gather to go 1 by 1 through every article, image and video making sure they were alright.
My suggestion is that Gather needs to pay attention to who is flagging articles, for what reason..... catch the people that are excessively flagging for no real reason and start discipling these people. Maybe start with a warning for a first offense, then a week long ban for the second offense, and a complete ban for the third offense.
Maybe if people started finding that there were consequences for improper, excessive flagging, maybe it would calm down a little!
