Note: This was the last of the three bios which had been in line for publication. I don’t see any recent activity for this creative on Gather. If you are in communication with him, please let him know he is being featured. Some of you have sent bio info and I will begin working on them soon as well. Keep ‘em coming as this is some of the most fun writing I get to do!!
Born in Cambay (Khambhat), India's oldest port, our featured creative has a favorite quote:
"Kudrat-ki sakhti nahin bayaan mein Iss-hi liye toh haddi nahin zubaan mein." author unknown, in Urdu. Meaning: (There is no harshness in practice by nature, that's why we do not have a bone in our tongue - paraphrased it means one should follow nature and be a soft spoken person.)
Please welcome Max Babi, our featured creative. A metallurgical engineer by training, he’s worked the last 36 years in Plasma Technology. He says, “The plasma is the fourth state of matter and it straddles some magical-seeming uses right from plasma screens to outer space propulsion. I have worked on thermal plasma and low pressure plasmas.” He wrote the first - ever online course in Plasma Nitriding which was offered through RedVector.com.
“I write in four languages, and hence, high quality translation is an obsession with me. I have done some widely-applauded transcreations from Urdu and Gujarati, some samples are showcased at Gather.”
This jazz enthusiast has an exhaustive list of hobbies. He says that is interests are, “Reading (voraciously in four languages), writing, observing people and their foibles, electronics / do it yourself activities, astronomy, traveling, meeting new people, collecting rocks/minerals, cooking occasionally, photography, encouraging unusual arts and performing arts.”
“My creative urges cause me to have a continual high with prolific results. My family shares my love for reading.” Both his wife and daughter are writers and music lovers too. He used to play the guitar but a motorcycle accident smashed his left elbow, with 85% loss of function. He gave up playing the guitar two decades back and says he doodles with the harmonica off and on.
What might you find surprising about Max? He is a published cartoonist who loves collecting quotes, short verse and proverbs. He was born in the Babi clan which has ruled parts of India, prior to independence, hailing from Afghanistan.
He says his heroes are M.K. Gandhi, Albert Einstein and Dr. Richard Feynman. His interest in jazz, blues and Indian classical music gets him into organizing or helping organize concerts. He’s on staff of JazzReview.com where he also writes articles. Max Babi's websiteis another place where there is a wealth of information about him.
Max describes himself as intellectually driven and lists some of his favorite books as: The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday, Tortilla Flat and other short stories (all by John Steinbeck), Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge, Collected Short Stories by W.S. Maugham, and every book written by Kurt Vonnegut.
Max Babi, a scientist, musician, writer/poet and dreamer is a fabulous and thoughtful creative. He has a substantial body of work on the web as well as here on Gather.
And it is on Gather where I found his Birth Of A Poem It speaks to me. Perhaps there is a message for you as well.
Best and Keep Shining,
Pamela
