On November 13th, ATO Records will release David Gray's Greatest Hits, which will include two brand new tracks produced by legendary Pink Floyd/Sex Pistols producer Chris Thomas. Single "You're The World To Me," which goes to radio September 24th, and "Destroyer" mark the acclaimed singer-songwriter's first studio recordings since 2005's Life In Slow Motion. The compilation is the first to feature songs from Gray's entire recording career, a period that encompasses seven albums, numerous record labels and in excess of 11 million albums sold worldwide.
Gray will tour Europe this November; a series of North American dates in December will follow (details to be announced shortly).
Trained as a painter at the Liverpool College of Art, in 1990 Gray eschewed canvas for a career in music. He released three critically acclaimed albums - A Century Ends, Flesh and Sell Sell Sell - and toured relentlessly (including supporting stints for Radiohead, Dave Matthews Band and Shawn Colvin), but commercial success was elusive and he was dropped by two labels in eight years. Gray retreated to his London flat to write and record White Ladder, which he released on his own label, IHT, in the U.K. The album - and its singles, "Babylon," winner of the prestigious Ivor Novello award, "Please Forgive Me," "Sail Away" and "This Years Love," all included on Greatest Hits - proved to be an international breakthrough for him. In the States, White Ladder was the debut release of ATO Records, the independent label co-founded by Dave Matthews. Gray performed on numerous television shows (including "Saturday Night Live," "Late Show with David Letterman," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "Austin City Limits"), was featured in publications such as Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Spin and USA Today and played to sold-out crowds in increasingly large venues. To date, White Ladder has sold six million copies worldwide (including two million in the U.S. alone) and in Ireland, it is the best selling album of all time.
Lost Songs 95-98, which captured 11 tracks that Gray had recorded between Sell Sell Sell and White Ladder (including the lilting "Flame Turns Blue"), came out in 2001. The following year, he received a Grammy nomination in the "Best New Artist" category and released A New Day At Midnight, which led to his second Ivor Novello Award - for the single "The Other Side." Life In Slow Motion followed in 2005, which USA Today hailed as his best CD in a four-star review while Rolling Stone noted: "Gray works up the kind of gentle melancholia that goes down smooth, but reappears later, in your head." In early 2007, he released a live album of covers, A Thousand Miles Behind, through his website. Gray continues to write and record at his studio in north London, and expects to have a new album ready for release by fall 2008.
