These are some helpful hints that hopefully should help some of you aspiring photographers produce some better results. I have been noticing a lot of pictures of flowers here on gather and seen some really nice pictures. The majority of you however could use a couple helpful hints. I have included some instructional pictures to help illustrate my point, but sadly my choice of flowers in Northern MI this time of year are few.
Most pictures I see are shot in full sunlight and from to far away. (see illustration 1)
It is helpful to shoot on an overcast day, but if it is not possible I use a quick cheap rig I made up. Using 2 old ski poles and a while garbage bag I soften the light. (see illustration 2)
Now the flowers look better with the softened light but I am still to far off (see illustration 3)
By moving in closer with the soft light I am able to create both an accurate and beautiful depiction of the flower. (see illustration 4)
Sometimes by using a spray mister and adding a little water you can make the colors pop a little more while adding a beautiful fresh look to them. Sadly I used to much water on this one. (see illustration 5)
I hope these will be helpful to you and your shooting becomes more enjoyable and rewarding. Please ask any questions you like and send me some pictures of your efforts.
If anyone has any other questions on how to get the most out of you photography I would like to make this an on going series. I have been a professional photographer for 11 years and love to teach and share knowledge.

I just wanted to stop by since I am finally going through what is now listed as under 5,200 pieces of gather new mail that is sitting in my inbox on here.
With that mentioned I just came across either a mailing from you yourself, or someone else brought this piece to my attention. You or they felt that your creation should be shared with the gather community, which I am very glad that it was passed on to me to view. So I wanted to say Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to publish it here on gather for us to all view. :o)
As well before I leave you I wanted to wish you a Happy New Year... in 2009 :o)
