Thank you all.
I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who took the time out of your busy schedules to read so many of the wonderful stories in this contest. Many had to step outside their preferred genre to read each posted chapter. We have some good ones, don’t we? The writers worked so hard to get everything ready for this contest, this opportunity to have their work commented on by fellow writers and put on public display. For some of us, it was the first time. That took courage.
I don’t know about other contestants, but I learned so much. Reading so many entries taught me what works, what doesn’t and more importantly, why. I feel like I just finished a crash course in writing. So many of the critiques were well thought out, some had good advice on how to make the story better. To those great writers and readers that not only offered critiques, but gave examples of what, where, why, and how, I say thank you. Thank you for your commitment, the hard work, and level of caring needed to do that.
I learned how to critique a story, not just for the nuts and bolts, but in recognition of talent, skill and content. I learned I didn’t need to be an English professor to leave comments. Most of us aren’t professional editors, so I left the technical editing to those savvier in those areas than me. Instead, I tried to do my best to put myself into your stories, listen to your voice, follow your thoughts, and see your intent when you wrote your story. As a friend put it: “…there are millions of books out there I wouldn't care to read, but that doesn't mean they're not excellent stories because they're not in my category of interests. …[try] to understand whether, the writer, [is] absolutely invested mentally and emotionally in [their] creation…” I thought that was excellent advice.
I also learned to have a healthy respect for the work professional editors do, although I still maintain they must be slightly insane to want to do this work. Given the attitude and behavior of some writers when receiving critiques, especially in this contest, I’m not sure if professional editors should be declared insane or nominated for sainthood.
Most important thing I took away from this contest? I’m a winner. Oh not that I made it to the top of Rand the Grand Wizard’s list, but because I've made new friends, new connections, learned some valuable lessons in perfecting my craft, and as Nietzsche said, “That which does not kill you can only make you stronger.” It might spike your blood pressure, make you a bit cranky, cause you some anxiety, and definitely some maniacal laughter now and then; but all in all, it made me stronger. And a better writer.
On a personal note, I want to thank all that took the time to stop by and leave comments on my entry and for your votes. There are some real 'Class Acts' out there and you know who you are. I especially appreciate the encouragement given, your private e-mails of encouragement, laughter, and friendship. For me, that was the blue ribbon in this contest.
Hearty congratulations to those made the cut for the next round! I will be stopping by to comment and vote for you as soon as your entries are up.

Your thoughts were a nice take on the experience, and a pleasant read.
Can't wait to see if my favorites made the top 25!
Sylvia we want to see good people succed, good luck darling. :)
JANE: you missed a treat. I still don't know my way around, I stumble on new places daily, lol! You'll find your feet.
JENNIFER: you did so good! Congratulations, unofficially #21--you go girl! Thank you, what a nice thing to say!
Great job, Sylvia.
You are gracious and generous in your comments . . . but I'm still not sure I can forgive you for killing Charlie the dog. Seriously, my experience was very much like yours. I'm so glad it's over in one respect, but really sorry that I won't be commenting and corresponding on chapters in another. Thanks again.
Now Lazarus, if Andy had been anywhere around when Roxanne was in distress, none of this would have happened, lol! I most humbly apologize, for killing Charlie, but he died a hero. Does that count?
I will miss that too, but hey, round two is coming up. Not as many entries, but...Before I forget, you did so well, Laz. I'm so glad that people appreciated Lacey and Andy's beginning. You be sure to let us all know when you get that published.
For all my laughter and teasing, which I enjoy, I am a determined person. I am totally committed to being published. Acknowledging constructive criticisms/suggestions, really thinking about them even if they irritate you, then applying them, is the only way to grow. That's only logical. I never lose sight of my vision, but I realized long ago that my words aren't sacred or written in stone. That's why I have this nifty folder for all my stories called a "dump file". I sometimes dump whole chapters--you never know when they can be used in something else, or somewhere else, in a story.
One thing I can't abide, either in myself or in others, is Prima Dona hissey fits at the merest hint of criticism. I detest vindictive and petty. It's ugly and eventually makes the person using it, regardless of their creative abilities, ugly. An ugly spirit, in my opinion, eventually destroys creativity.
I'm with you and Tracy, can't wait to see the final list, and cheer them on. Tracy, I imagine we could post our chapters afterwards, if we wanted. I'm sure there will be some feedback on do's and don'ts soon.
Now starts the exciting part, applying what we learned and getting it to the publisher.
I am working mine towards publication. I had several query letters out prior to the contest although I didn't have any agreements or contracts or I couldn't have entered or stayed in the contest. But I have an agent for women's fiction interested and she knows of this contest. She read the first few chapters and liked it, asked me to make some changes and resubmit to her after the contest is over. Need I say that I'm excited. But I am also a realist, interested doesn't mean published--yet. But still....yay! But omg, this contest taught me so much and now I need to put it into practice. Trust me, if I get a contract, you'll know.
Thanks again.

Fate and Destiny - Chapter 2
But it's nice to be commended, but the truth is I did the commenting because I feel that all the writers who worked so hard deserved to have their work commented on, not because I could win something.
My sis is already 'helping' me with books to buy. Hmmm, funny thing with that, they seem to be ones she wants to read, lol. I told her to use her own Borders Gold or whatever its called. You know those little sisters can be, Tracy, lol!
It is my understanding that there will be gift cards given on round two as well.
Well done.
While we can not control what others do or say, we can control ourselves and attitude is one of those things. I choose to have a balanced but positive one. I've found that positives draws positives, rather than negatives.
However, as I recently told a friend of mine, the last time I tried to walk on water, the ice broke, lol! It tends to keep one humble, lol!
