UF Student Tazered, Arrested After Questioning Kerry

UF student Andrew Meyer, a 21-year-old, was questioning John Kerry during a Q&A with students when his microphone was cut off after a question about Kerry's involvement with Skull & Bone. Within seconds the police attempted to escort him out of the room and Meyer resisted the escort and the scene quickly escalated to resisiting arrest, then being knocked down, tazered, hand-cuffed and taken into custody and jailed.

There were many video cameras in the room and YouTube members have posted numerous videos of the scuffle. Do you think his rights were violated, or was he disturbing the peace?

As far as the article, I did a story too but was sure to point out the "victims" radical leanings. Either way, people who ask democrats questions they don't like, always get hassled and escorted away from the "production".....

Another interesting question I have is how would this have been portrayed in the press if the speaker were not Kerry, but a Republican like George W. Bush, Guiliani or McCain?

This was wrong. We should all be alarmed that this happened to a student who was asking a question, whether it be a conservative or a liberal student. Besides, he was tazered after he was pushed to the back of the room and was not longer a threat to anyone. For once, I would be happy to see the ACLU step in.

from watching and rewatching the film there really wasnt enough of a reason to use a tasar. He was down 4 officers around him and then use the tasar? I just dont see it. He was out spoken and most certainly didnt follow the format of the question and answer session but he was loud but not violent.

I agree with you Ty it simply was excessive for the offense committed if any.

Indeed, he was not following the format of the debate and he was annoying, but it is over excessive when armed guards have to take him away and tazer him! He was not a threat to anybody. Kerry even said that it was ok and that he would answer the question! Insane...

I don't see why they felt the need to escort him out of the room. Once they decided to do that though, he did resist -- and police do not let you do that.

The tazer was over the top and unnecessary. I think some police pull that out too quickly, especially for the environment they were in.. it's a University and these are not harden criminals.

Wow Mel, your honesty is stunning. I am truly impressed.
The police officers acted very unprofessionally, and I'm ashamed of the lookers-on for watching so passively. If one or at most two police officers can't escort out one un-armed man, however verbally aggressive, how can we trust them to handle an actual threat?
It was just a question - and not a very threatening one, at that. Kerry made some lame attempts to settle things down but he showed the same lack of command and confidence that cost him the 2004 election.

I think the trend towards arming police forces with tazers is a dangerous one. Many officers use it responsibly of course but there are far too many others who see it as an extension of their badge - they don't like you and they tazer you which still wouldn't be so bad in many instances but the damn things are dangerous. They use them on the young, the old and the in-between without any regard for their health or other factors. Seems like every week or so we here about some insane incident with the tazers. I think we need to take a step back from arming a bunch of goons with something they are told isn't dangerous and they therefore use freely - consequences be damned.

Don't blame Kerry for this. For God's sake, the idiot was still answering the guys question as he was being hauled away. This is simply a case of some rent a cops getting out of control. The kids was loud, but not violent, and seemed to be at the end of his long questions when they attacked him for no reason. I actually do agree with the kid though. We had lots of election fraud in 2000, and 2004.
