I'm a stay-at-home mom to my 20 month old daughter who does not go to any kind of daycare, and yet my toddler is home sick today. How is that you may ask - let me explain. She's got a cold and a very slight fever so I don't want to take her to the parent's center we often go to (even though that is where she picked it up) and it is somewhat chilly outside so I don't want to take her out especially considering her new found skill of being able to undress herself. This of course leaves me with the daunting task of entertaining a bored and cranky toddler, and that is why I say she is home sick today.
Here is what I have discovered works the best with my daughter - 1)dance! I put on some upbeat music, take her hands in mine and dance for as long as I can stand it. 2)chase - running circles around the couch never seems to get boring for a toddler especially if you chase after them bouncing a beach ball off of the back of their head. 3) tickle - what child doesn't love to be tickled? 4)the old stand-by - reading books together.
After hours of alternating these activities with food she has finally gone down for a nap and now here I am writing about it! Yeesh, I need to explore the rest of my life sometime and let everyone know that I am something beyond a mother.

Play with food too - kids LOVE getting messy - bake bread, or maybe some cookies, and have her knead the dough. Heck, you're already exposed to the germs, so you might as well give her a day of enjoyment! Jello too - kids love helping out with Jello and pudding.
