Dear Members of the University of Iowa Community:

I am delighted to report today that the National Institutes of Health has announced one of the largest awards ever given to The University of Iowa, a $33.8 million grant to fund the University of Iowa Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, under the direction of Dr. Gary Hunninghake. This highly competitive grant puts the University in elite company. We join only 23 other institutions in the nation who have received these awards.

While the amount of the grant is impressive, it is the scope and vision of the award that are most inspiring. This is a transformational award that will dramatically change the focus of our world-renowned biomedical research enterprise. It will enable us to bring laboratory research to patients much more rapidly.

The institute will work with physicians, hospitals, and community health centers across the state to bring cutting-edge biomedical research and clinical trials to patients in their own communities. It is the largest and most comprehensive interdisciplinary effort ever undertaken by the University, with 39 centers and institutes and all 11 Colleges participating. In addition, we have established collaborations with Iowa State University, The University of Arizona, Iowa Health Systems, Mercy Health System, and other health agencies around the nation.

The application for this award began more than two years ago, and the preparation involved 150 people. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hunninghake and his team, Vice Presidents Meredith Hay and Jean Robillard, and everyone who worked on the application for this incredible success.
